THE

recent Living Kitchen exhibition in Cologne recently was certainly a surprising affair. I’m generally used to being a little underwhelmed by any exhibition apart

from Eurocucina in Milan but this was different. Don’t get me wrong, Living Kitchen wasn’t a patch on Milan in terms of scale or indeed international representation. This is first and foremost a German trade show for the German market, despite the somewhat broader claims of the organisers. But the scope and the commitment of the exhibitors’ offerings was impressive to say the least. Nestled in three halls of the much larger IMM Cologne Furniture Fair, the show managed to present kitchen furniture and appliance brands side-by-side seamlessly. And the predominantly German brands that took part didn’t let visitors down – concepts, new products, and significant enhancements of existing product lines were all in evidence, providing lots of inspiration and food for thought. If you didn’t make it to Living Kitchen, the good news is that you’ve not missed out

entirely. This issue of Designer contains many of the highlights and the most significant trends, with even more coverage to come next month. There was something about this show that just seemed to work better than a lot of the

alternatives. It will certainly be worth taking your chances with Cologne’s collection of largely ropey hotels to pay Living Kitchen 2013 a visit. designer
