For this year’s bathrooms, Tristan is anticipating a surge in matt materials – a trend driven by the motoring industry; he gives BMW’s utterly stroke-able matt black cars as an example. He also predicts the controlled use of colour on ceramics. “I’m talking about relevant colours – not a return to the horrors of the avocado suite. All of Tom Ford’s houses have black WCs. Black is a strong statement but if it’s done well, I think it can look brilliant,” he explains. Technology will increasingly be
embraced in our bathing spaces, but in a
hidden not overt way so that users can enjoy the benefits without technology encroaching into our ‘down-time’. “I think we’ll also see bigger
reinterpretations of vintage and traditional designs with unusual finishes such as pigmented woods and deep grain oaks. There’s still a nostalgic air and consumers are hankering after past genres,” he adds. At Kohler, Tristan is fast sealing his
reputation for experimenting with the old and new, hybridising disciplines and exploring different ideas and materials.
However, in his Wisconsin home, the three bathrooms are all clad in pale marble with pure white ceramics and simple fittings. In fact, with the exception of one wall in the master bedroom – where Tristan bowed to his wife’s pleas for his Zoffany wallpaper – the entire house is free from his own designs. “Bathrooms should always be a sanctuary
from work, even if you work in bathrooms! In fact, the whole house is painted in pale Farrow & Ball shades, which reminds us of home and is very clean and pure,” he concludes. designer
