space as it draws the eye to the extremities of the room. And if the room looks onto a garden or terrace, the feeling of space can be created by lighting the outside.”
ZONING IN Whilst light can be used to help smaller rooms feel more spacious, it has also become increasingly useful as open plan living has become more popular. “If used strategically, lighting can be used to create zones which help to define the various areas of the space,” says Linsky.
Subdividing a large room can be
achieved by putting the room into zones of light that are controlled separately. “This is where systems like Lutron and Crestron come into their own,” says Thorne. Christopher Hyde, an established designer of classic lighting, explains that in large bedrooms, for example, light can be used to create different zones that each become a focal point. “Large bedrooms can be broken into separate areas, with bedside lamps or adjustable wall lights for the sleeping area, a chandelier above the bed, a desk lamp on the writing table and table lamps on the dressing table and on each side of a sofa.” Whilst all these tips will undoubtedly
help to create a successful residential lighting scheme there is one more valuable piece advice that should not be ignored - and that is to plan ahead. “Lighting schemes can often be left to the last minute, but it can really affect the overall end look,” says Linsky. “Think about lighting at every stage of the design process to really get the most out of your project.” designer
