Book Reviews PROCESS (2nd edition)
By Jennifer Hudson (Laurence King) £24 ISBN: 978-1-85669-725-5
For anyone interested not just in the end result of the design process, but rather how a particular product came into existence, this book provides an enlightening insight into the processes – and the minds – of a varied set of designers and manufacturers.
Featuring an international selection of furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles and products from both long established and emerging designers. Each product is selected for its significant use of new technology, unorthodox or complex production process, use of innovative materials (or traditional materials adapted in new and unexpected ways) and, in some cases, for the conceptually creative thought behind it.
If anything, there is perhaps too much emphasis on chairs and lighting, but Kohler’s Karbon Articulating Kitchen Tap designed by Niels Eilmus and the OnlyOne mixer tap by Lorenzo Damiani for IB Rubinetterie do at least provide some direct examples to keep bathroom oriented readers happy.
Above all though, through detailed text explanations and insightful drawings and photographs of the design and manufacturing stages, the designs emphasise that the development is 5 per cent inspiration and 95 per cent hard work.
101 HOTEL ROOMS
By Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk and Peter Joehnk (Braun) £39.95 ISBN: 978-3-03768-071-1
As our lives accelerate to keep pace with today’s frantic world, the possibility of truly arriving at a destination grows in importance. Hotel rooms represent one such place where the boundary between journey and arrival, movement and stillness is most tangible.
Interior designers are faced with the challenge of creating rooms that allow an authentic stillness in the most inherently transient of interior spaces. 10
1 Hotel Rooms presents different
design concepts by Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk and Peter Joehnk, joint managing directors of Hamburg-based interior architects JOI Design and specialists in the field of hospitality design.
The projects are organised by means of categories such as resort, urban and beach hotels and each is presented with of plans and drawings as well as an explanatory text that reveals the concept behind each design.
What makes this title especially valuable is the direct insight into the planning process of two professional and highly successful interior designers, but the strong and inspirational photography will be the aspect that leaves the biggest impression.
