FESTIVE DRINK DRIVING ON THE UP IN COUNTY

H

e r t f o r d s h i r e Constabulary has

released the results from its festive anti- drink-and-drug driving campaign, which shows the number of people arrested for driving under the influence has risen slightly compared to the same period last year. This year, 139 people (11% of those stopped) were arrested for

testing positive, refusing or failing a breath-test and one person arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs. Last year‘s campaign saw 113 people (10% of those stopped) arrested for drink driving, with four people arrested for drug driving. The campaign, which ran from 1 December 2010 to 1 January

2011, aimed to reduce the number of motorists tempted to drink or take drugs before driving. Officers were briefed to carry out breath tests and, where relevant, Field Impairment Tests to all drivers involved in road collisions, as well as being on the lookout for suspicious driving as part of their usual patrols. "It's encouraging that we have not seen a dramatic rise in the

number of people putting themselves and others at risk by drinking and a decrease in the number taking drugs before driving over Christmas," said Chief Inspector Donna Pierce from the Road Policing Strategic Unit. "However, there are still a number of people who continue to flout the law, and my message to them is, our work to combat this dangerous crime doesn't stop now the festivities are over." If you know a drink driver, you can help by calling 0845 33 00

222 and telling the police where and when they drink. If you know someone has been drinking and is about to drive, always dial 999.
