FEBRUARY 2011 THE RIDER/ 5 Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week Celebrates 45 Years!

Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week (GBFW) celebrated its 45th anniversary in January 2011, making it one of the longest run- ning producer education programs in Ontario. It has evolved into a six day event in Elmwood, featuring a day for each of the major commodities in Grey and Bruce Counties including, beef, dairy, goat, sheep, ecological, horse and crops. Horses have been included on the agenda for 34 years. The program was initially held in the evening in 1977, moved to the afternoon in 2003, and in 2007 the program expanded to a full day, with 145 horse enthusiasts present. In 2004, the organizers incorporated an interactive youth program that ran concurrent to the adult program. Participants at GBFW Horse Day have the opportunity to learn from industry experts, network with equine exhibitors, and connect with other equine enthusiasts. In 2011, as in past years, the GBFW planning committee delivered a stellar line up of speakers with practical and useful horsemanship tips. Dr. Mark Gallagher, Nottawasaga Vet. Ser- vices, presented a brief overview of Integrative Veterinary Ther- apies for Horses including Chiro Practice, Acupuncture, Postu- ral Rehabilitation, Herbal Therapies and Prolotherapy. Kim Logue, English Instructor, reviewed, Classroom Without Cor- ners, which provided important aspects to consider when con- structing a round pen. Nanci Picken, CTRA, spoke about Safety Around Horses. After our amazing roast beef on a bun lunch we were delighted to have Constable Terry Russel with the RCMP speak to us about the RCMP Musical Ride. He certainly capti- vated the audience with his information about the RCMP and their horses. Liz Ritchie, Famous Ritchie Clydesdales, gave an informative presenta- tion about Driving The Draft Horse. Anne Gage, Confident Horsemanship, rounded out the day’s pre- senters with Applying Horse Psychology to Train- ing. Anne definitely intrigued the crowd, and left them wanting to hear more another year. The kids in the Youth program had a great time. They met two youth champions, Bryce Shaw and Scotty McMahon. Bryce is a Team Penner, and Scotty competes in Breakaway Roping. The kids even had a chance to learn some roping tips hands on with Scotty. The youth also made horseshow picture frames, learned horse gaits through rhythm instruments, learned about safe horse handling, hel- met safety and trail safety. This was all done in an interactive environment.

If you missed this great event, mark your calen- dars and be sure to get out next year, Sunday Jan- uary 8th 2012. For more info call Grey Ag Ser- vices, 519-986-3756, email info@greyagservices.ca or check out our website www.greyagservices.ca and check out the GBFW pages.

Jump Canada Board held a

productive open house at the Equine Canada Convention

The Jump Canada Board held a productive open house at the Equine Canada Convention in Ottawa to deal with the Task Force exclusivity recommendations. The Board then followed up with lengthy and highly positive consideration of the Task Force report and recommendations during its regularly scheduled Board meeting on Saturday, January 29th.

The Board wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the time and efforts of the Task Force members. While none of the Task Force’s recommendations were specifically adopted, the Board did agree to create three working groups to further study, revise and build upon some of the recommendations. All conflicts of interest on the Board, real or per- ceived, were acknowledged and dealt with pro- fessionally and appropriately. It is anticipated that the working groups will report back to the Board no later than the next Jump Canada Board meeting in May.

“I am very pleased with the progress that has been made with regard to these important issues and I am thankful for the positive and respectful process that has occurred,” stated John Taylor, Chair of Jump Canada.
