I am writing this introduction after seeing Sally Storey, design director at John Cullen Lighting and Lighting Design International, has given a talk on hotel and spa lighting at interiors 2011 in Birmingham. This seems to be the second month in a row where I have praised the work of a lighting designer, but I couldn’t let this issue of A1 Lighting go by without giving Sally a mention, plus she has written two pages for this issue on her top tips for lighting kitchens. Self-proclaimed ‘queen of uplighting’, Sally’s lighting schemes are both fresh and inspirational, bringing spaces to life and highlighting all the key features. As Sally said, ‘the art of lighting design is learning how to control the light source.’ She dislikes the idea of using grids of lights and also believes that people should forget about symmetry and just light which features they want within a space. Some of the images Sally used throughout her presentation were truly stunning, and prove her ideas work and bring out the best in a space.

Following on, our opinion this month comes from Stephen Lisk,

director at One Eighty Light, who discusses the factors affecting good lighting. He feels there are two potential forces conspiring against good lighting at the moment. The first is the economic downturn and the second, if we're not careful, is energy legislation. This month’s focus is on the decorative lighting sector, looking at some of the latest designs, and we also dive into the wonderful and quirky world of task lighting. Enjoy!
