Collective Architecture The Lighthouse in Glasgow

A touch of snow

Collective Architecture creates an interesting focal point for The Lighthouse in Glasgow.

Sno-lite is a 12-armed 'snow flake' light developed by Collective Architecture in collaboration with W K McMillan Fabricators. The light was originally made and installed for Glasgow City Council in the Glasgow International Festival of Light 2007 and subsequently has just been installed in The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Sustainable Design for the festive period.

This fitting design was developed as a

prototype for a repetitive geometric fitting that would allow for multiple variations and the possibility of combining several in larger conglomerations. Following the development of the concept and detailed design, Collective Architecture subsequently worked in close collaboration with W K McMillan Fabricators to construct this first prototype. The fitting uses proprietary waterproof low energy lamps secured to a bespoke metal structure.

A combination of steel and aluminium was utilised to reduce weight so that the Sno-lite can be suspended from a variety of mounts, with the end of each arm milled from a solid billet of aluminium to give a precise mount for the lights. The 2.5m diameter fitting creates interest by day and a very bright halo of light by night. The use of low energy fluorescents means that power consumption is low, with the whole fitting running from a standard 13A plug. The fitting is suitable for permanent installation outside in temperatures down to -20°C.
