which is mechanical, or if we make a heartfelt change. (The third type of change is the one that is thrust upon us when our life circumstances change, but we won’t explore that one here.)
So, let’s look at the difference between mechanical change and heartfelt change. The language of mechanical or ego-based change is “should” and “must”. It comes from our heads and not our hearts. It is results orientated (it’s OK to want end results, but when they are your primary focus it can become a problem, drowning out the joy of the journey). Ego-based results are driven by how we think our life will be when we reach our goal. There’s often a sense that something is missing in our lives now or we are not good enough. Most change in the Western world is mechanistic and ego-based.
Then there is heartfelt change. The language of heartfelt change is “This feels right for me now” and “I’m ready for this.” It comes from our hearts and not our heads. Heartfelt change is about the journey, and not the end result. With this type of change, we love ourselves where we are now, but want to go on a journey of self-discovery all the same. We are complete, but this change will enrich our lives.
Another aspect to making lasting change is to consider if you are in the right vibration to create transformation in your life. Esther Hicks and Jerry Abraham have formulated an emotional scale, where the highest vibrational emotions such as love and joy are at the top of the scale, and the lowest vibrational emotions, such as depression, are at the bottom. There are 23 points on the scale, with an inverse relationship: the lower the number on the scale, the higher the vibrational quality of that emotion. The ideal is to remain in the group from one to seven as much as possible—all of these emotions are of the highest vibration and are what we might label ‘positive emotions’. So let’s see where some of the emotions associated with heartfelt change are on this vibrational scale. Notice that the higher vibrations are heart-based and the lower vibrations are ego-based.
Faith is at 3, enthusiasm at 5, belief is at 6, and empowerment and courage at 7. These are the emotional states that we need to be in to create

transformation. However, if we start to look at some of the ego-based emotional states that many people come from when they try to create change, you can see where the problem lies. Boredom, discontentment and desire are at 9 on the scale, pessimism is at 10, frustration and impatience are at 11, doubt and scepticism at 14 and greed is at 17. Whilst right down at the bottom of the scale we have being stuck at 19, guilt at 20, jealousy, competition and envy at 21 and insecurity and shame at 22.
There are certain techniques that can accelerate your ability to transform, clear the negative energy around being stuck, and change your vibrational state. Called Energy Psychology techniques, they enable you to quickly create shifts in your mind and body simultaneously, so that you are able to create lasting change in your life. You may have come across some of these techniques, and some of the most well known are Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and Matrix Reimprinting. They involve tapping on meridian points on the body (the same points used in acupuncture), while simultaneously engaging the brain in a specific manner. They enable you to rewrite the programmes of the subconscious so you do not repeat the same patterns over and over again. These techniques can be used for any type of problem or issue to resolve the underlying issues that are driving a particular behaviour.
The key is that if you have been trying to make a change without addressing underlying subconscious programmes, then this is probably why you may have not have been successful over the long term. You need to first ensure that the change that you want to make is heartfelt, and then clear any subconscious blockages you have to transformation before you can move forward. So if you have not been successful in your New Year’s resolutions so far, maybe it’s time to try some of the new tools and techniques that can affect you on a subconscious level. Then you’ll have a better chance of successfully transforming.
