Did You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions?

s you enter February, are you finding that your New Year’s resolutions, made with the best of intentions, are starting to slip away? If so, then you are not alone. There are a whole host of reasons why New Year’s resolutions don’t work. When we start to explore them, we are really looking at the deeper issues of why it is so challenging for us to transform and how we can effect deep personal change in ourselves.


All over the Internet you can find studies on the success rates for New Year’s resolutions, which highlight the underlying challenges of personal transformation. In a study carried out by the University of Hertfordshire, for example,


researchers followed 2,000 people who made a two-week resolution and found that those who relied solely on their own willpower failed even before the half-way stage—only 26 per cent of those who relied on willpower managed to keep to their goal.


So how do we make our New Year’s resolutions last? How do we effect transformation on a deep, personal level? Just lately I have started to recognise that there are three types of change and that we need to be coming from the right place in order to create lasting transformations. The difference to our success is whether we make the choice to change with our heads and egos,
