7th February 2011 NORTH WEST COUNTIES LEAGUE

HALTON SIMMS CROSS’s hopes of retaining the KUKRI NORTH WEST COUNTIES LEAGUE title effectively vanished with the 39-10 home reverse at the hands of leaders BANK QUAY BULLS.

Bank were 19-0 ahead at the interval and Simmies’ tries for Steve McDermott and Leon Phillips, plus a Neil Percival goal, came too late to affect the outcome. Kiel Hillman, Darren Cragg, Paul Cragg, Phil Braddish, Danny Wood, Keiron Naylor and Scott Davidson cruised in for the Bulls; Anthony Braide (4) and Chris Foster kicked the goals, with the latter adding a field goal.

BARROW ISLAND travelled to WIGAN ST CUTHBERT’S with only 14 players and lost 36-0. Lewis Sheridan scored two tries and four goals for the Saints, while Curtis Shaw claimed a hat- trick and Matty Lowe and Shaun Foster crossed.

Martin Queen, meanwhile, was voted onto the BARLA Board of Management as a Youth Representative, while Phil Woolas remains in post as BARLA President, despite losing his seat as a Member of Parliament after being deemed guilty of telling untruths about an opposing candidate in last year’s election campaign.

KNOTTINGLEY STOLZLE have

reformed – as a summer side. Stolzle, who enjoyed some success in the CMS Yorkshire League, have opted to join the Co-operative Rugby League Conference from the end of April. Their squad will be made up of former Knottingley players, who had drifted away to rugby union and other clubs, and on that basis their application was rubber-stamped by delegates at last week’s meeting of the Castleford & Featherstone ARL, who voted unanimously in favour.

League Chairman Phil Hodgson said: “Clubs voted unanimously in favour of Stolzle starting again and we are delighted to have them back. “We are, however, very concerned that neither the Rugby Football League nor Rugby League Conference chiefs directed them to us for the approval of existing clubs in the area.” He added: “We wrote to a number of bodies in January last year stressing the importance of that being done in respect of new sides, for the health of the sport in the area, and our request appears to have been ignored, Stolzle being invited into the RLC without being advised to approach us.”
