A new beginning for Super League W
By MARTYN SADLER
e now have less than a week to go before the start of Engage Super
League XVI.
In our preview of the new season over the next four pages we have listed the squads for each of the 14 Super League clubs, as well as their fixture lists, and the players who we believe are each club’s Key Man, Best Newcomer and their player with a Point to Prove. We also list the players from each club who are favoured to win the Albert Goldthorpe Medal, and the Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year Medal. We state the Super League record of each coach in the competition, and we predict the finishing position for each club.
In listing the Super League squads, we include the names of the initial 25- man squads that each club has notified to the RFL, including their squad numbers.
But, with the RFL’s rules on ‘Club
Trained’ players playing such a key role in the way that the Super League clubs compile their squads, we break down each club’s squad into ‘Club Trained’, ‘Club
Trained ‘Federation Whilst Trained’ and
There’, ‘Non-
Federation Trained’ players. We also indicate for each club which of its overseas players are included on the quota.
In order for our readers to understand
the meaning of these and other key terms, we set out some of the most relevant regulations that govern the way that Super League clubs can put their squads together.
Can Wigan retain their Super League crown in 2011?
SQUADS
1 Each Super League club must nominate a first- team squad of up to 25 players. 2 Clubs may then make amendments to that first- team squad during the season with the prior approval of the RFL.
SALARY CAP
1 The combined earnings of each club’s top 25 players must not exceed £1.65 million, the same figure as in 2010. 2 Clubs are only allowed to sign a player if they have room under the cap. 3 Clubs can spend a maximum of £50,000 on players outside the top 25 earners who have made at least one first-grade appearance for the club during the year. 4 Costs for players outside of the top 25 earners who do not make a first-team appearance will be unregulated. 5 Any player who has played for the same club for at least ten consecutive seasons will have half his salary excluded from the Salary Cap for his eleventh and subsequent seasons, subject to a maximum of £50,000 for any one club.
KEY SUPER LEAGUE REGULATIONS
6 The first £50,000 of each club’s most highly paid ‘Club Trained’ player will not count on the salary cap.
1 For the 2011 season each Super League club must have a minimum of eight Club Trained Players (including Club Trained Whilst There Players) in their 25-man squad, and a maximum of five non- Federation trained players, unless that club has been given a dispensation allowing it not to comply with this rule. The Crusaders, for example, have been granted permission to have a minimum of five Club Trained players, and a maximum of 12 non- Federation trained players in 2011. The Catalan Dragons have been granted permission to have six non-Federation players in 2011. 2 A ‘Club Trained’ Player is one who has been on his current club’s register for three full seasons before the end of the season in which he ceases to be eligible by age for Reserve Grade football (21). 3 A ‘Club Trained Whilst There’ Player is one who
CLUB TRAINED AND QUOTA PLAYERS
has spent part of his time, but not three full years, on his current club’s register before the end of the season in which he ceases to be eligible by age for Reserve Grade football (21). 4 A ‘Federation Trained’ Player is one who has been on the register of one or more member clubs in the Great Britain or France for three full seasons before the end of the season in which he ceases to be eligible by age for Reserve Grade football (21). 5 A ‘Non Federation Trained’ Player is a player who does not meet the above definitions. The definition would include overseas players who first came to this country over the age of 21, and any players over the age of 21 signed from rugby union, for example. 6 ‘Non Federation Trained’ Players who were playing in this country when the regulations were introduced in 2008, and who had signed a contract before 1st February that year, can be given a dispensation to be counted as Federation Trained Players. 7 Each club is allowed a maximum of five players on its Overseas Quota. Players who have an EU passport, or who carry a passport of a country that is party to an Association Agreement, a Europe Agreement or the Cotonou Agreement do not count on the Overseas Quota.
