The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor

Improv Troupe Comes to PHS for a Family Night of Comedy

The award-winning comedy improve theater group Improv Unlimited will present “Satire Night Live!”, an evening of comedy improv for the entire family, at the Pelham High School (PHS) Gym on Saturday, February 5, at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the performance will benefit the PHS Technology Student Association (TSA). The TSA is a small group of students dedicated to exploring opportunities in science, engineering, technology, and design innovation. The TSA hopes to raise money to compete in state competitions in a variety of areas fostering personal growth. I’m excited to have Improv Unlimited performing in our community. The show should provide an excellent form of entertainment for everyone. Tickets are available for purchase at the PHS office, or they can be ordered online at www.Comedy-Show-Tix.com. We’d love to have community support and see everyone have a great evening. Please join us and “laugh your head off,” no shoveling required. Thank you in advance for your support.

Stephanie Wimmer for School Board

I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Windham School Board. My husband Mark and I moved to Windham seven years ago and have two children at Golden Brook School. As my children are just beginning their educations in the Windham Schools, my commitment to our schools is both personal and long-term. During my years in Windham, I have

served on the boards of the Friends of the Library of Windham (FLOW) and the Windham Endowment for Community Advancement. I teach religious education classes at my church and serve on my parish council. Six years ago, I became an advocate for the construction of Windham’s first high school, serving on the Steering and Integration Committees for that project. My goal was, and continues to be, ensuring that we send our children into the world prepared for the brightest possible futures. Recently, I have taken a leadership role on our district’s Facilities Master Planning Committee. If you have not seen the work of this committed group of citizens and administrators, I encourage you to visit www. windhamsd.org and look under “Facilities Planning.” Our master plan is nearly complete, and I believe it provides a sound academic and economic roadmap for our district for the foreseeable future. My work

on this committee has reinforced my belief that we need to be vigilant with our decisions about education, making sure they have both academic and economic value. As your representative on the

Windham School Board, you can expect the following from me: • I will work diligently for our students, citizens, and educators. As I approach issues, I will ask myself four key questions: o Does it improve the quality of the education we offer?

o Is it financially prudent, and does it provide value for our taxpayers?

o Is it what the citizens of Windham want?

o Is it something we can successfully accomplish?

• I will listen. As your representative on the School Board, I will be open to hearing your concerns and getting answers to your questions, whether you are a citizen, educator, or student.

• I will be a positive force committed to moving our schools forward. I am stalwart in my conviction that while we must learn from the past, we are most successful when we focus our energy and passion on the future. In terms of my educational and professional background, I have a BA from Hamilton College, a Masters in Business Administration from Dartmouth College, and a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University. During my 20-plus year career, I have worked in corporate finance, management consulting, education, and healthcare economics. I am a full-time working mother, and for the past eight years I have been a healthcare economics expert for Medtronic, Inc. I have experience when it comes to applying traditional business principles to an industry (healthcare) where people’s lives and the quality of those lives are driving factors. I believe education and healthcare have that in common, and I am a passionate advocate for both. I hope you will vote for me on

March 8. I am anxious to hear your concerns and answer your questions. You can e-mail me directly at stephanie@stephaniewimmer.com and learn more about my background, experience, and goals for ALL of our schools on my Website at www.stephaniewimmer.com.

Stephanie Wimmer - Windham Joel Dube

for School Board

My name is Joel Dube and I’m running for a position on the Windham School Board. First, I’d like to announce that we’ve

arranged for a televised (WCTV) public debate with an invite to all School Board candidates to attend. The debate will be held on the second floor of Windham’s town hall from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, February 18. All

are welcome to attend and to submit questions on the night of the debate; we will work hard to get to as many questions as possible. I’m hoping that all candidates will accept the invitation. My primary reason for running for School Board is to work towards improving the Board’s processes and increasing the public’s involvement and trust in the process. I will focus on the following. • Providing the public with clear and timely information prior to Board meetings enabling the public to engage in the process and speak intelligently to the issues.

• Drive accountability within the Board as well as Administration.

• Encourage voters to attend our public hearings; it is not possible for five to 10 people to arrive at the right decisions when running a $40 million organization, which is our school system.

• Foster transparency. • Look after the best interest of both our students and our taxpayers; they are clearly not mutually exclusive interests. Quick background on myself. I’m the proud father of a second

grader at Golden Brook School and I’ve lived in Windham for 10 years. I’m an avid backyard mechanic and will try to fix just about anything with a motor. I enjoy volunteering at the Harvest Festival giving tractor rides. My wife is a member of the Friends of Windham Library and works at the Golden Brook School and volunteers at the school most weeks.

I’m a Certified Public Accountant in the state of New Hampshire and I’m a Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Information Systems Auditor; as you can imagine, I like numbers, budgets, and asking questions, and I don’t stop asking questions until I feel as though I understand the subject matter. I owned my own business

while in college, I’ve been a truck driver, a Supervisor and acting Tour Manager in the Postal Service a Corporate Controller, and am currently the Director of Internal Audit at a public company. Relevant experience includes being a member of a union and managing a union workforce.

On a personal note, a few years

back I was awarded the Carnegie Hero Foundation Medal of Honor and the Massachusetts Human Society’s Silver Medal for pulling three people out of a burning car on Route 93. I mention this as an indicator that I’m not the type to

avoid problems; rather, I like to dig in and work towards resolution. As we all know, Windham is facing some critical issues within our education system, we’ve had two consecutive failed budgets, and there’s been a proposal to split the third grade,

with 60 kids being added to an already incredibly overcrowded Golden Brook School. The attendance at the School Board meetings is incredibly low and overall faith in the process seems to be waning.
