s many members know, Sara Baker, long-time executive assistant to the general manager and the Board of Trustees, is retiring from Multnomah Athletic Club Feb. 25. I will miss Sara more than words can express. She has been the most professional assistant that I have ever worked with and has served our trustees extraordinarily well.

would ever want to know. She always has a smile on her face, and in her voice that was infectious.” Nancy Fuhrman says, “She was my life-support system. She always had an answer for every ques- tion I had. She fi lled in the blanks. She had an attentive ear and a silent tongue.”

Sara and her husband, Bryan, are moving to Martina Franca, (Puglia) Italy within the next year to go back to the Italian roots started by earlier generations of her family. Her paternal grandfather came to the United States through Ellis Island in the 1910s from a village in the Province of Naples, Italy, and settling in upper New York. Sara holds a dual citizenship in the U.S. and Italy. I asked staff and past presidents to give me some observations or great stories about Sara to share with our membership as we watch her venture out into her new world. Tim Arbogast, our CFO and assistant general

manager, says, “Sara was wrong, once, but no one knew it.” Communications Director Michole Jensen says, “Sara had an uncanny knack for viewing a photo and knowing that something was altered. This started after I took a photograph of the directors. Everyone looked great except Sara, who had her eyes shut. I decided to copy the eyes of another director and put them on Sara thinking she would never notice. She looked at the photo and then at me saying, ‘Those aren’t my eyes.’ From that point on, she always insisted on looking at any photos of her before they were published.” Sara speaks at least three languages: Thai, English and Italian. Rain or shine, she leaves the club and walks nearly every day at lunch time. If you ever want Sara to fi gure out something for you, just intimate that it cannot be done (she is tena- cious) and it will be done. Former GM Steve Tidrick says, “We know Sara has been an outstanding employee and representative of MAC and its entire staff. Positive adjectives are limitless in describing Sara, her work ethic and intelligence. But you know what? Beneath all those superlatives is a person with a great sense of humor, genuine kindness and humility. I sincerely treasure the time that we were able to work together.” Past President Tom Elliott says, “Sara is one of the most pleasant ‘can do’ kind of person you

From Panama writes Jon Nickel, “Her smile, willingness to help, attention to detail, gracious demeanor are gifts which the club will miss greatly. Grazie di tutto! Arrivederci e buona fortuna.” Writes Peter Richter, “Sara Baker, the best insti- tutional memory of MAC secrets and history we have. She, despite repeated requests by me and other past presidents, had the wisdom and integ- rity to not disclose secrets, and only disclosed the history when asked, doing so with charm.” Bill Crist writes, “Sara possesses a phenomenal ability to reach back in time on a moment’s notice and recall earlier inquires, studies and ad hoc committee reports about endless subjects germane to the orderly operation of the club.” Sara met her husband, Bryan, while they were both serving in the Peace Corps in Thailand. They were married by the Thailand Peace Corps director under papaya and banana trees in the garden of Bryan’s village house. “We are still newlyweds, 28 year later,” says Bryan. Sara has served the club for 19 years. Carol Beauchamp served before Sara for six years in various capacities; Lorraine Miller for 23 years; and Louise Godfrey fi lled that position before records were kept but it is believed to be from 1938 until 1970.

Sara has not outlasted them all but has added grace, professionalism and leadership to her position. Tara Lematta, our new execu- tive assistant, has joined this elite group and is a welcomed addition to keep our traditions of excellence going. We will have an Italian feast for Sara, Bryan, staff, and past trustees to wish Sara well and thank her for all her contributions Friday, Feb. 25. She will be missed but never forgotten. Thank you, Sara; it has been my pleasure to serve with you, be respected by you, and to get to know you. Our paths will cross somewhere, some day soon.

Men’s Locker Room project This year the club has numerous construction and remodel projects, including the basement- level Men’s Locker Room. There is a page on the club’s website dedicated to this project. Members are encouraged to check the website and maga- zine for information. Ideas or comments are welcome by emailing lockerroomfeedback@ themac.com. WM
