No matter who else wins a tournament on TOUR in 2010, it’s a safe bet that Ernie Els’ victory in the World Golf Championships- CA Championship will go down as one of the year’s most popular victories, both among the fans and his fellow players. 25˚

The victory was Els’ 17th on TOUR (to go with 61 international wins coming into 2010) but more importantly, it snapped a two-year winless run—the longest of his career. With a certain symmetry, he beat Charl Schwartzel, 25, a fellow South African who was Els’ protégé as a youngster and his houseguest for the week.

Els showed touches of his old genius by playing the final 23 holes without a bogey and closed with a 6-under-par 66 on his way to a four-stroke victory.

“I’m 40 years old. I’ve had a tough run,” Els said. “It’s just great to win again. This means so much. I didn’t think it was ever going to happen again. But I felt all week that the work that I did, that I finally had to trust it at some stage, and there’s no better day to really test yourself. I just wanted to prove to myself for once. Charl came at me all day. I had to come up with the goods.”

The turning point came on the 14th hole on Sunday, when Els was clinging desperately to a one-stroke lead and facing a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole. In a moment of high drama, the putt barely made it to the hole but finally trickled in.

“I basically just wanted to make five and get out of there,” Els said. “I haven’t been making those kind of putts, and you have to win golf tournaments at some point. Luckily for me, I did it on the 14th hole today. And absolutely, I felt a lot better after that. I felt like maybe this one is for me this week.”

With his win, Els became only the fifth player to win multiple times in the World Golf Championships, along with Tiger Woods, Darren Clarke, Geoff Ogilvy and Phil Mickelson. He also moved to No. 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

There are any numbers of reasons for Florida’s

remarkable growth in the 20th century. You can begin with the all-natural stuff like the sunshine, the water and the adjoining beaches. Then there was the creation of Henry Flagler’s railway line, the interstate highway system, the expansion of airline travel and that marvel of marvels, air conditioning. But giving credit where credit is due: let’s not forget golf, and more specifically, professional tournament golf. Dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, club professionals who found themselves with time on their hands during
