MATCH PLAY PRODUCES SOME PGA CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Today, many people may not recall that from 1916 through 1957, the PGA Championship was a match-play event and was extremely popular. It also produced champions who would go on to become members of the World Golf Hall of Fame: “Long” Jim Barnes, Walter Hagen (a record five times), Gene Sarazen, Leo Diegel, Tommy Armour, Paul Runyan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Jack Burke, Jr.
