didn’t actually have to play on the last day. After taking a four-stroke lead into Sunday, he had to wait for two days until the final round was scrubbed because of heavy rains.
DISAPPOINTMENT FOR PAUL GOYDOS Midway through the back nine on Sunday, it looked like Goydos might come away with the win. He took a one-stroke lead into No. 14 and then Pebble Beach took her revenge. His first chip ran off the green and then his second chip failed to make it up a slope and the ball rolled back to his feet. Another chip and three putts and he had a nine on his scorecard—a card that would eventually be marked with a 78 which led to a tie for fifth place. “It wasn’t like I didn’t try on all nine shots,” Goydos said.
“The ninth one I really wasn’t all that excited about. It’s just everything I did on that hole didn’t work out.” For the record, he wasn’t the only player who crashed
and burned on 14. Bryce Molder and Alex Prugh also made nines. Besides Johnson, another player who was pleased with
the week’s results was David Duval, whose comeback remains a work in progress. Duval shot four solid rounds, culminating with a 3-under-par 69. “I feel like I did most of the things I wanted to do today,” Duval said. ■

• Last year’s tournament marked AT&T’s 25th year as sponsor. Only Honda at the Honda Classic has been a sponsor longer.
• With his victory, Dustin Johnson joined Sam Snead, Dr. Cary Middlecoff, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Mark O’Meara as back-to- back winners.
• Pebble Beach has hosted both the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and the U.S. Open in the same year four times, just as it did last year. Coming into 2010, only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have won both tournaments in the same year.
Most Victories: Mark O’Meara (5)
Charity Link
The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am has raised more than $79 million for the Monterey Peninsula Foundation since its inception. The 2009 event raised approximately $6 million for local charitable concerns.
The 17th hole at Pebble Beach. “WALKING DOWN THAT
18TH HOLE WITH ALL THE FANS OUT THERE WAS JUST
UNBELIEVABLE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE
CLEAR DAY. IT’S ONE OF THE
MOST BEAUTI- FUL HOLES IN GOLF.”
– Dustin Johnson on Pebble Beach Golf Links
Among the many sensational holes at the Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the most celebrated is the 177-yard, par-3 17th. The hole plays slightly downhill to a green that is beautifully bunkered and sits out on a small point of land with a beach a backdrop of Monterey Bay.
The final round of the 1972 U.S. Open was brutally windy. Jack Nicklaus came to the 17th hole leading the championship on a day that would see the field average 76.6 strokes. Nicklaus pulled out a 1-iron (you don’t see many of those on TOUR anymore) and played one of the greatest shots in Open history. The ball came to rest inches from the hole and Nicklaus had all but locked up his third victory in the Open. Later, when asked about the shot, Nicklaus made a remarkable revelation.
“As I started my downswing I could feel I was out of position so I made a mid-swing correction,” he said.
Which is why he is the gold standard of golfers.
