FITNESS

trailers arrive on site by Monday night of tournament week and are ready for players by early Tuesday. A rare exception occurred last October when the mobile facilities had to be hauled from the McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, GA, to the Frys.com Open in San Martin, CA, causing a Wednesday opening that next week. By early afternoon during Sunday’s final round, all the equipment is secured and ready to be transported to the next tournament site. Most players say their first trip on

site is to the trailers, which are normally hidden from public view, either near the practice facility or the player parking lot. It is estimated that at least 75 percent of the field will visit this destination during the course of a tournament week. The facility is staffed from two hours before the first tee time until approximately 7pm. Inside the two gyms is enough equipment to impress the best NFL team or allow players to build their own physical therapy practice. In the fitness trailer, players can be found working out in preparation for a round with either weights or stationary bikes or getting a quick workout afterward in a gym setting with multiple televisions on the walls. In the therapy trailer, players are getting stretched out or undergoing treatment for the nagging injuries that wear on PGA TOUR players—wrists, necks, backs, hips, knees, etc.—by a team of two physical therapists, two athletic trainers and a chiropractor. In a two-hour period at the inaugural

McGladrey Classic last fall, you could count the ailments players have experienced as they visited the media center: Love (neck, back and ankle), Zach Johnson (a left-wrist injury, supported by taping) and Jonathan Byrd (hip surgery in 2004). Byrd credits Gary Player, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods as the role models for

Knee injuries on the golf course

Golf may not be a contact sport but, like any sporting activity, it puts pressure on the body, especially as it involves a lot of repetitive movements. Sporting injuries can cause a lot of hassle to a person’s game and, in some extreme

cases, it can even stop them playing altogether. Therefore recognising potential golfing injuries can really benefit any golfer in the long run. Along with lower back pain and inflammation of the arm joints, one of the most

commonly reported injuries in the golfing industry is knee pain. The knee is not designed for the rotation and side-to-side movement that is required by a golf swing, so precautions should be taken to ensure that minimal pressure is placed on that area. When you are on the golf course, examine how you use your knees during a golf

swing, as this is the most likely place for a golfer to gain a knee injury. During set-up you should ensure that your weight is evenly distributed on both feet. As you carry out your swing, control how you level your weight on each leg and do not make too many sudden movements. It is also important to wear well-fitted shoes. Shoes that do not provide a sufficient

amount of support on the arch of the foot can lead to injury. Although this may not appear to be a great threat, once a golfer has walked the 18 holes of a golf course, up and down hills and through sand, it can lead to a significant amount of pressure put on the knees. Exercise can minimize the chances of a golfing injury. To prevent knee injuries, it is

a good idea to work on strengthening the cartilage, also known as the meniscus. The cartilage works as a cushion between the bones in the knee, helping them to slide against each other without causing any damage. Regular low-impact exercise, such as using an exercise bike or an elliptical trainer, can help to strengthen it and prevent injury. If you are unfortunate enough to get a knee injury, it is vital that you do not ignore it as

you risk making it worse. If the injury is not too serious, often just bandaging and resting the leg can help to soothe the pain. If the injury is swollen, then you can apply ice to the area to help decrease the swelling. However, if the injury has not improved within 48 hours, then you should always seek medical advice for a professional diagnosis. Looking after your knee during games of golf is very important: just ask Tiger Woods who has faced severe knee problems throughout his career.
