PGA TOUR News Digest Merritt’s Kodak Challenge victory
Troy Merritt had a hectic day to conclude the 2010 PGA TOUR season at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic. The rookie played well enough to finish 125th on the PGA TOUR money list and retain his fully exempt playing privileges for 2011. This came after he moved in and out of the top 125 at least four times during a final- round 67. Then, he exhaled and returned to the par-4, 17th hole to capture the Kodak Challenge in a sudden-death playoff to take home the $1-million first prize. Merritt, Rickie Fowler and Aaron Baddeley tied at 17-under par
in the Kodak Challenge, forcing a playoff on the long 17th hole at Disney’s Magnolia Course in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The rookie put his 133-yard approach to within 18 inches. After Fowler and Baddeley each missed long birdie putts, Merritt tapped in to secure the Kodak Challenge victory.
Kuchar’s great season Matt Kuchar won once in 2010, in a playoff at The Barclays, and finished sec- ond to Jim Furyk in the FedExCup. But that only begins to show how much of a breakout season it was for the 32-year- old Sea Island, GA, resident. Kuchar captured the Arnold Palmer Award for leading the PGA TOUR in earnings (more than $4.9 million) and the Vardon Trophy and Byron Nelson Award for the lowest adjusted stroke average (69.61). He also led the TOUR with 11 top-10 finishes.
Matt Kuchar’s triumph
2010: the year of crazy scores! Last year produced some of the craziest scoring in golf history. From early May until August 1, scores of 56, 57, 58 and 59 were shot at some of the game’s top events, including record-tying 59s on the PGA TOUR by Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby. Goydos opened the John Deere Classic with a record-tying 59, the first sub-60 score shot on
TOUR since David Duval in 1999. However, Steve Stricker shot 60 on the same day at the TPC Deere Run course in Moline, IL and Goydos finished second to Stricker in the tournament. “Some people try to shoot their age. I shot my height,” the 5-foot-9 Goydos joked. Appleby holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-3 18th hole at The Greenbrier to shoot his
59 and come from seven strokes back to beat third-round leader Jeff Overton by one in the inaugural Greenbrier Classic. The 56 was shot by Trevor Murphy, a 25-year-old former champion skier in Vermont, who
made one eagle and 12 birdies in the Tuesday pro-am for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Open on the Nationwide Tour. The unofficial score included a 13-under streak for 13 holes at one point on the 5,800-yard, par-70 Gray Course at Ohio State’s Course in Columbus, OH. Bobby Wyatt, 17, shot a 14-under-par 57 in the second round of the Alabama Junior Championship at the Country Club of Mobile. Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa, 18, shot a final-round, 12-under-par 58 to win The Crowns title on the Japan Golf Tour. The score was the lowest official score shot on a major professional tour.
