loose a very rare and unexpected display of pure emotion perhaps unseen since his beloved Steelers last won a Super Bowl. “It just hit me,” said Furyk, who closed with an even-

par 70. “I was excited and dropped the putter and... I don’t know. I guess at that moment, you’re not really responsible for what happens next.” After he hugged his wife, Tabitha, he asked her the

$10-million question: “Did I win the bonus?” “Yes, dear,” she said, or at least something very much

like it. Furyk was the third seed when the PGA TOUR Playoffs

for the FedExCup began but was disqualified from the opener when he missed his pro-am time at The Barclays because the battery died in his cell phone, which he was using as an alarm clock (memo to Jim: Try using the very excellent wake-up call services offered by most hotels!) He was No. 11 in the standings going into THE TOUR Championship, and became the first player out of the top 10 to win the Cup. The victory was particularly special for Furyk, one of

the most durable and popular players on TOUR, who did exactly what he needed to do on Sunday. “The first part of the scenario is, I have to win, and the

rest of it I can’t control,” he said on the eve of the final round. This is what’s known as getting the job done, which is what champions somehow manage to do. ■

• Last year’s field included ten players who were competing in THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola for the first time.

• Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan are the only players to reach Atlanta in all four years of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Most Victories:

“I WAS EXCITED AND DROPPED THE PUTTER AND... I DON’T KNOW. I GUESS AT THAT

MOMENT, YOU’RE NOT REALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.”

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson (2)

The par-5 ninth hole at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

Two legends of the game, Bobby Jones and Alexa Stirling, learned the game from East Lake’s Scottish professional, Stewart Maiden. Jones remains one of the game’s supreme champions and arguably the greatest amateur in history, and East Lake was where he played his final round of golf before his body began to deteriorate from syringomyelia, a disease that laid waste to his body. Sterling won the most-important women’s championship of the time in America, the U.S. Women’s Amateur, in 1916, 1919 and 1920.

East Lake hosted THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola for the first time in 1998, when Hal Sutton won, and today is the tournament’s permanent home. One of the course’s appeals is that its home hole is a longish par 3, which is an oddity but often adds a note of excitement to the final round of the championship.
