Jim Furyk won THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola with his usual strong all-around game:
• Furyk was a perfect 9 for 9 in sand saves, including hitting a 57- foot, 7-inch sand shot to 26 inches for the clinching putt on the 72nd hole.
• Furyk hit 53 of 72 greens, tied with Nick Watney for best in the 30-player field.

not once, not twice, but three times—at the Transitions Championship, the Verizon Heritage and THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. The wins, his most in one season, brought his PGA TOUR career total to a very respectable 16 which, since a U. S. Open is included, is tip-toeing him into World Golf Hall of Fame territory. • Won the FedExCup for the first time and the very handsome $10-million check that goes with it.
• Broke his personal record for single-season money winnings.
• Played in his seventh Ryder Cup. • Became a strong—if not the leading—candidate for the Jack Nicklaus Trophy as Player of the Year.
• And, most importantly, didn’t let it go to his head. By his own admission, Furyk’s performance at THE

TOUR Championship ranks right up there with his victory in the 2003 U.S. Open, and it did exactly what the tournament was designed to do: end the season with an exclamation mark. Before moving to Atlanta’s historic East Lake Golf
Club, the championship had been played on some of the country’s most-esteemed courses, among them Pebble Beach, Harbour Town, Pinehurst No. 2, the Olympic

FURYK WON IN GRAND FASHION Playing the long, par-3 18th in the rain-delayed final round, Furyk hit his tee ball into a deep greenside bunker. The good news was that he had a one-stroke lead to play with. The bad news that even under the best circumstances, it was not an easy shot. But under the pressure of the moment and dealing with wet sand, Furyk played a shot for the highlight reels, the ball coming to rest two feet from the hole. It was no gimme, but it was still a thing of beauty. When he ran in it a few minutes later he had a one-stroke victory over Luke Donald. The FedExCup had a new and deserving champion—and one who let
