beloved Red Sox will be in the thick of a pennant race with the hated Yankees. If that weren’t enough, their Patriots will be kicking off another NFL season, the Celtics will be on their way to hanging another championship banner in the Garden off Causeway Street and hope will again spring eternal for the Boston Bruins. And happily, the PGA TOUR comes into the area for

Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, agreeably located about halfway between Boston and Providence. Last year the big story was free-spirited Charley

Hoffman, who came to event No. 2 in the PGA TOUR’s Playoffs for the FedExCup looking for his second career victory and, possibly, a shot at making the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Hoffman brought a healthy confidence to the course

in Norton, MA, in part owing to a vastly improved bunker game, which he described as being “borderline horrendous” in 2009 (he ended the season ranked 130th in Sand Saves) before he went to work with James Sieckmann, a short-game specialist who had helped several of Hoffman’s fellow pros. To say that Hoffman was diligent in his effort to improve

is an understatement. He actually worked so hard that he injured his left wrist. But all that work paid off with

abor Day weekend is a special time for New England’s sports fans. First of all, if the stars have aligned properly, their

a brilliant bunker shot on the 13th hole during the final round.

NO. 13 WAS THE KEY FOR HOFFMAN Tied with England’s Luke Donald for the lead on No. 13, he faced a difficult, long-bunker shot with the ball below his feet. But while the shot might have terrified him in the past, Hoffman played it perfectly, holing it for a birdie and the solo lead—a lead he wouldn’t give up. He ended the day with 11 birdies en route to tying the event’s 72-hole record of 22-under set by Vijay Singh in 2008. The victory vaulted Hoffman to the No. 2 place in the

FedExCup standings behind Matt Kuchar, who had won The Barclays a week earlier. Hoffman’s improved bunker play was reflected in the

fact that he was ranked 70th in Sand Saves—and he gave much of the credit to Sieckmann.
