bronchitis and allergies. If that weren’t bad enough, the medications he was prescribed turned out to be as debilitating as the illnesses themselves, at one point sending him to a hospital emergency room for treatment. On the Monday of the Nelson, however, a doctor

finally got it right and determined that Day suffered from a chronic sinus infection. But again, the medicines took their toll on him and he considered pulling out of the tournament. Still, he gutted it out and was rewarded with his first TOUR victory—although it didn’t come easily. Although he again considered withdrawing on

Thursday, he was tied for the lead after the first round and stayed in contention all week. But he almost booted it at the end, when he hit his approach to No. 18 into the water hazard and had to settle for a two-over-par 72. As it turned out, his playing partner, Blake Adams, followed suit and drowned his approach as well, and made a double bogey to Day’s bogey. Adams wound up tied for second with Brian Gay and Jeff Overton. “I wasn’t nervous,” said Adams, a 34-year-old rookie.

“I just didn’t play well.” For his part, Spieth—the U.S. Junior amateur

champion—doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to pursue what is almost certainly his designated career path— the TOUR. After graduating from high school, he plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin, which has produced the likes of Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite and Justin Leonard. “It was awesome,” said Spieth. “Starting the week,

I definitely would’ve taken a top-20 in a heartbeat. Obviously now, being a competitor, I look back at the mistakes I made that didn’t give me an opportunity to win. “I wouldn’t say (this week) changed me fundamentally,”

he added. “But I can’t wait to get back out there and do it again.” ■

• No player has won all four TOUR events in Texas, but Corey Pavin has come the closest, with victories in all but the HP Byron Nelson Championship.

• Fourteen players have won both the HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

• Through the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, eight players in the 20s have won on TOUR in 2010, which is more than all of 2009.

Most Victories: Tom Watson (4)

Numerous people have left their fingerprints on the TPC Four Seasons. Robert Trent Jones did the original design, and in the 1980s, Byron Nelson and fellow Texan Ben Crenshaw (along with architect Jay Morrish) oversaw a major renovation. Nelson, who grew up and had a ranch in the area, had some basic beliefs about what worked and what didn’t, and he insisted they be reflected in the course. Crenshaw and Morrish happily agreed. Another renovation was needed some 20 years later, so in advance of the 2008 tournament, Champions Tour player D.A. Weibring was brought in to do his handiwork, which was widely praised. Weibring and his team reworked every tee box, green and bunker, and saw that some 165 trees were moved. Some of the mounding was softened and areas around the putting surfaces were closely mown to reward skilled short games. The result was scoring that was almost two strokes higher in 2008 than in 2007.
