HP Byron Nelson Championship

140˚ 110˚ T

here’s an old saying, “Youth will be served,” and that was certainly the case at last year’s HP Byron Nelson Championship, as Jason Day, who was 22

at the time, met then 16-year-old local amateur Jordan Spieth, in the final round on Sunday. For the record, there are probably players on the

Champions Tour who have clubs older than either of the kids. To help put this all into perspective, Day was the

youngest player to win on the Nationwide Tour when the Australian won the 2007 Legend Financial Group Classic Presented by Cynergies Solutions. Spieth tuned up for the tournament by playing in the previous week’s state high school championship. Naturally, Spieth, who is entering his senior year in

high school in 2011, was a prohibitive local favorite. “I was walking to the fourth hole and it looked like there

were a thousand people following him,” said Day. “It took a little bit of pressure off my shoulders knowing that the good majority of the fans that were following me were close friends and family.” Alas, fairy tales don’t always come true and Spieth, who trailed by three strokes on the back nine, faded to a tie for 16th.

DAY OVERCOMES A ROCKY STRETCH Still, for all the excitement generated by Spieth’s remarkable performance, Day’s victory was every bit as good a story, given that he had to overcome the demons of high expectations, and three-and-a-half winless seasons on the PGA TOUR. “It’s been a hard, tough road,” said Day. “I’ve had a lot

of negative thoughts go through my head. I would always think of what jobs I could do if I didn’t secure my card. I’m glad I just stuck through it.” If all that weren’t enough, he had to overcome illnesses,

both long-term and during tournament week. Since the beginning of the season, Day has been diagnosed with illnesses varying from swine flu,
