Do you know the history of Saint Valentine and the special day that he inspired?
Valentine
was a priest who lived in Rome during the third century. Rome was ruled by the
emperor Claudius, who was unpopular with many people. He wanted to have a large army, but found that men did not want to leave their wives and families to go away and fi ght wars.
Claudius decided that he would forbid people to marry, thinking that unmarried men would not mind joining the army. Valentine thought the new rule was cruel and continued to marry couples in secret. When Claudius found out, he threw Valentine in jail and sentenced him to death. Many people supported Valentine and visited him in prison. Valentine grew close to the prison guard’s daughter, who would visit him for hours at a time. On the day he was sentenced to die, February 14th, Valentine wrote her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it, ‘Love from your Valentine’. Now every year on February 14th, people send each other cards and think about love and friendship. By trying to stand in the way of true love, Claudius saw to it that Valentine will never be forgotten.
