SALTBURN’S TOWN TALK
There comes a time in the preparation of every issue when I have to declare that ‘enough is enough’. If I could afford it, the magazine could be much bigger and better, and, as I always keep on saying, there is never enough space to include everything. But what I’m referring to when I say ‘enough’ is the seemingly never-ending problems, stress, conflicts without resolutions, balancing vested interests with fairness, decisions that have to be made, last minute changes and submissions after the deadline that I try to accommodate, and all the other problems that are simply just part of the job. It’s
Marske Mill Lane Old School Site - Public Meeting: There will be a public meeting at the Saltburn Community Theatre on Wednesday, 16th February at 7.30pm. The meeting will discuss the way forward in the debate about the possible transfer of the building and site into community ownership. All members of the public are invited to attend, in particular representatives of groups or organisations who would like to take part in the future management of the site. If there is sufficient interest in acquiring the title to the
land and buildings at this meeting, another meeting will be arranged to examine the detailed arrangements for committed parties to apply to Redcar & Cleveland for a community asset transfer. See also article on page 47.
Bertie the sheep is to be evicted from Emmanuel Church grounds for “health and safety” reasons. Church wardens have given Paul and Andrea Tidy until February 1st to remove the sheep, which has been tethered in the grounds for nearly four years. They have offered to help them to find a new home for Bertie. Mr Tidy said he was very sad and he might have to have Bertie slaughtered.
Saltburn in Bloom: Saltburn is in Britain in Bloom this year. Helpers are needed, please, to look after the permanent planters. To sponsor a basket, perhaps in memory of a loved one, £37, a tub filled with flowers £58, and a lamppost £78. The forms will be at the outside stall on Saturday mornings. Saltburn 500 Club: Victorian Weekend is on Saturday, 20th August. We hope residents will dress up in Victorian dress. If there is anyone who would be able to advise and assist residents in making Victorian style outfits contact 624046. Band Concerts: commence Sunday, May 1st at 2.30 to 4.00pm and Saturday, June 4th at 6.30 to 8.00pm. Would anyone who attends the concerts be prepared to assist in collecting sometimes? You will be shown what to do by experienced collectors. If we can’t collect donations at the concerts we will not be able to pay for so many. Contact 624046. Saltburn 500 Club Christmas Lights: Thank you to the businesses for paying for lights on their premises, to Joan Guy for letters, and to Jeff Walker, John Etchells, Mike Johnson, Bill Johnson, David and Lynda Parkes, Jenny Terry, Frank Maidens, Tom Blenkinsop MP and Alan Gates. Without your help we would not have Christmas lights in Saltburn.

WI Report: Saltburn Ladies WI was held on Thursday, January 13th in the Methodist Chapel. It was well attended as it did seem ages since we had last met, because our carol service and party had been cancelled. However, we do have our Christmas dinner yet to come, so we can look forward to that and it will be nice to be able to relax and enjoy it after all the hassle of Christmas etc. Our speaker on Thursday was Hazel Stephenson, who spoke to us about how determined and against all odds she decided to write a novel. She now has written three. Her first one is called ‘Land Girls and Lovers’. Well worth a read as she was a very amusing lady.
