Bronco Basketball Tallies First Victory
by Sue LaRoche It took seven games, but the Alvirne Broncos came up with their first victory of the season, handing Timberlane a 66-50 loss on Friday, January 21. After several games in which the Broncos came close to a victory, including a two-point loss to undefeated Trinity, the team finally won their first contest handily. After a close first half, 30-29, the Broncos turned it on and totally dominated the Owls, 23-4, in the third quarter. With a full-court press, resulting in many turnovers and easy buckets for the Broncos, Alvirne cruised on to victory. Tony Beaulieu had five of his eight steals in the third quarter and scored seven of his 14 points in the third stanza as well. Jon Baldwin contributed five steals in the game. Leading the way for the Broncos were Caleb Donnelly with 18 points, Beaulieu with 14 points and eight steals, Tyler Livingston with 10 points and six rebounds, and Jimmy Tomaswick with nine points and eight rebounds, including five offensive rebounds in the third quarter. Tyler MacDonald added seven points, Pat Nager had four points, and Sean Dunn and Kip Yoksh had two points each. The Broncos are 1-6 and will host Concord on February 1.

Cyclones Arena Skating School Receives National Recognition
submitted by Cyclones Arena Skating School The Cyclones Arena Skating School
now has youth rental skates available, thanks to a grant from the United States Figure Skating Association. The United States Figure Skating Association awarded the financial grant on behalf of the Robert V. Hauff and John F. Dreeland Foundation for the purpose of developing community-based programs that will attract, involve, and inspire new generations of skaters. Out of approximately 900 established programs across the country, the Cyclones Arena Skating School was one of only 12 programs to receive this grant. The Cyclones Arena Skating School director, Curt Doten, is enthusiastic about what this grant means for future skaters in the area. “This grant has allowed us to invest in top-quality rental skates for young children, which will be a huge benefit for our current and future young skaters,” he said. For many families, this will mean having the opportunity to try skating without investing in skates for the entire family. Talking about his own history with the sport, Doten says,
“I probably never would have stepped on the ice as a child if my parents had needed to buy skates for the whole family just to try it out.” The availability of youth rental skates has allowed the skating school to offer a new variety of classes; this one targeted to tots 3-5 years old. “Whether it’s hockey or figure skating, an early start is very beneficial,” says Doten. The new tots classes will be held on Thursday mornings, 11:10 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be an open registration session during the class period on Thursday, January 20, and classes will begin the following week. The new fleet of rental skates is
available in limited youth sizes, and may be used on any Cyclones Arena public skating sessions or classes. Public skating sessions are Saturdays and Sundays from 3-4:20 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-1:20 p.m. Basic Skills learn-to-skate classes are Monday evenings from 6:20-7:10 p.m., and Saturday afternoons from 2-2:50 p.m. The new tots classes are on Thursday mornings from 11:10 a.m. to noon.
