by Sue LaRoche The Alvirne Lady Broncos improved their record to 7-2 in NHIAA Division 1 girls’ basketball (11-2 overall) as they defeated the Timberlane Owls 48-43 on Thursday, January 20, at the Steckevicz Gymnasium. In this see-saw battle, the Broncos played well, but could not put the Owls away until the fourth quarter. Alvirne led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, went down 18-15 at the half, and were down by two points, 30-28, at the end of the third quarter, but managed to outscore Timberlane in the fourth quarter, 20-13, to claim the victory. DJ Purcell got hot just in the nick of time, scoring 12 of her 18 points in the final stanza to lift the Broncos to victory. With just under three minutes remaining in the contest, Purcell scored a basket to give Alvirne a 40-39 lead, which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Taylor Carbone added two points to the lead with 2:30 to go, making the score 42-39. The Owls would not go away quietly, however, and closed the gap to 42-41 with about a minute to go. Katie Donovan, who also had a monster game, scored a basket with 40 seconds to play, giving Alvirne a 44-41 lead. Veronica Moceri stepped to the line with 14 seconds remaining and calmly hit both ends of a 1 and 1 to lift Alvirne’s lead to 46-41. Purcell finished the scoring for Alvirne with another basket, making the final score of 48-43. Donovan led the Broncos with 22 points, four rebounds, three blocked shots, and one steal, followed by Purcell with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, and four steals. The junior varsity squad was
