Planning Board Addresses Old Cisco Building

by S. Aaron Shamshoyan The building formally known as Digital and later Cisco will soon be occupied again. The facility at 9 Northeastern Boulevard has been empty since Cisco Systems moved out. The building is about 650,000 square feet with 3,500 parking spaces, making it the largest building on one floor in Salem. Bruce Lavine addressed the Planning Board on Tuesday night about future plans for the facility. The first tenant to move in will be Comcast. They will occupy 128,000 square feet in the rear of the building with a warehouse facility and office space. They plan to move in February 1, and will employ 128 people. The second tenant will be CCS Corporation, a third-party billing and collections company,

headquartered out of Newton, MA. They will be moving 425 employs from an office in Andover and plan to grow the operation to close to 800 employees, both full- and part-time. They plan to move in July 1. Lavine is still working with a company in

Lawrence as a third tenant for the facility. The three tenants will bring in over 1,000 employees to the building. The building will also be renovated to add windows, a fitness center, and a café for employees.

“I think there some pretty exciting plans that will be a good benefit to the community,” said Ross Moldoff, Planning Director.

by Robyn Hatch Film is a powerful medium—it generates billions of dollars and untold hours of entertainment around the world. Understanding how film creates and delivers ideas and how it shapes and reflects popular attitudes adds to the appreciation of the cinematic experience. A seminar titled “Understanding Movies: The Art of Film” by Patrick Anderson of Colby- Sawyer College, held at the Kelley Library on January 20, highlighted the power of film and its history, dating back to the days of Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffin.

Because film is one of the most powerful influencers in the present

world, it is interesting to note that film actors who have entered into the politics have done tremendously well due to their hero image in films, from Ronald Reagan to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in Hollywood.

NH Fourth and Eighth Graders Top Nation in Science Test

submitted by Colin Manning Governor John Lynch has announced that New Hampshire students led the nation in science test scores, continuing the state’s reputation as a national leader in education. According to the results of the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NEAP) exam, New Hampshire fourth graders were tied for first – along with Virginia, North Dakota, Kentucky and Massachusetts – while New Hampshire eighth graders were second behind only North Dakota. “The latest test scores affirm that we in New Hampshire value education and we have some of the best schools in the country. While our schools have long been among the best in the nation, we must continue working to make them even better,” Governor Lynch said. “The quality of education we are providing our children today will help determine the strength of our state’s economy for decades to come. We must continue our strong commitment to education to help ensure New Hampshire’s continued success.” In New Hampshire, 2,700 fourth graders and 2,600 eighth graders were selected to take the exam. For both grades, possible scores ranged from zero to 300. The national average for both grades was 149, with average score for New Hampshire fourth graders at 163, and the average for eighth graders at 160.

Selectmen Authorize Funds Transfer for Town Weather Budget

by S. Aaron Shamshoyan The Winter Weather Operations budget was up for discussion at Monday night’s selectmen’s meeting. The fund is running low after the recent storms that have moved through the area. Currently, $340,000 has been expended from the fund, leaving only $240,000, which does not include snow removal being conducted Monday night. A suggestion came from Acting Town Manager Dr. Henry LaBranche to move $165,000 of the $168,000 remaining from the 2010 fund to

the 2011 fund. “That’s a good snowy-day fund,” said LaBranche, referring to the about-$400,000 that would be available if necessary. The Winter Weather Operations budget will appear before the town at the deliberative session and may need to be amended for a higher amount. Selectmen Pat Hargreaves suggested that four more storms were to come, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. The Board then agreed and authorized the transfer of the funds. The transfer will not affect taxes.
