Ice Dams Cause Leaks, Wall & Ceiling Stains

Rather than sit around the house and play video games all week, 16 Cub Scouts from Pelham Pack 25 took a trip to the McAuliffe- Shepard Discovery Center in Concord on December 29 to learn about astronomy. They toured the center, got an overview about every planet in the solar system, and learned about everything from asteroids and black holes to red giant stars and the Milky Way galaxy that we live in. The tour was led by an astrophysicist from the Discovery Center who took the boys on a trip into deep space and back. During a presentation in the domed theater, Tiffany Nardino took the troop

deep into Orion’s Belt in the constellation of Orion and into the nebula that hide there. Nothing in space was hidden, as she led the boys anywhere they asked to go during the presentation, from the North Star to the moons of Jupiter and back again. Since it was a clear night, the boys were fortunate enough to get a private trip up into the observatory to view – you guessed it – Jupiter and five of its moons through the Discovery Center’s main telescope! A great way to end the visit and everyone was very excited and couldn’t wait to get to the library to take out a book on the wonders of the Universe!

submitted by Rodney Thompson On January 14, the Pelham FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team presented and demonstrated in front of Pelham’s fourth grade class by having their robot complete some of this year’s challenges. The overall goal of the FLL program is to get kids excited about Science and Technology. Each year, the FLL program delivers a new challenge for the kids to work on, and this year’s theme was called Body Forward, which focused on Biomedical Engineering. There are two main components to the challenge: a presentation of some kind to communicate the research (this team created a PowerPoint presentation) about the topic, and the completion of tasks by the robot on a thematic playing surface. Check out www. usfirst.org for more details. For the robotic challenge, the kids need to build a robot that will work autonomously to

complete various challenges. The kids figure out how they want to solve each challenge and then program the robot using LEGO Mindstorms Technology. From there, it’s a lot of testing and re-programming until the robot successfully completes each task. This team built a simple robot (called Zippy-Bot) from scratch and then built and added attachments for each of the challenges. During the presentation, the team demonstrated Zippy-Bot completing four of the challenges. During a real FLL competition, they are allowed two and a half minutes to complete as many challenges as possible. The team consisted of six kids: Leo, Eric,

Joshua, Jared, Tommy, and Alex, and Coaches Rodney Thompson and Corey Ducharme. If you have an interest in coaching or if

your child may be interested in joining an FLL team for the 2011 school year, e-mail pelhamlego@yahoo.com.
