Windham Boys’ Basketball Perseveres Under Pressure
by David Jaracz Monday’s Division II boys’ basketball match- up between the Windham High Jaguars and the Spartans of Milford High featured two teams at opposite ends of the New Hampshire high school standings. A fast start by Milford and cold outside shooting by Windham saw form hold up, as the Jaguars were defeated 67-39. The Spartans started
the game with a 10-1 run, powered by seniors Mike Mitchell and Jamie Holder, who combined for 17 of Milford’s 18 first-quarter points. After a nice driving cut to the basket by Jaguar Conor Redmond narrowed the gap to 10-4, Milford used their experience advantage to widen the gap to an 18-7 lead at the end of the first period. Windham (0-9) tried to spread the offensive duties around and, in fact, they ended up with eight different players on the score sheet. Andrew Lowman, Alex Whitehead, and Scott Priestley ended with six points apiece, and Joe Lorenze
led the team with eight points. This was still not enough to keep up with Milford (8-0), who remains the only undefeated team in Division II play. The Spartans were able to extend their lead in the second quarter, using team speed and ball movement to get clear shots when they could, and getting to the free-throw line when they couldn’t. When a team falls behind early free throws can be the difference in the game, and the Spartans kept their composure, going a perfect 8-8 at free throws as the first half came to a close. The second half ended with the Jaguars down 39-16.

in events. In freestyle swim, Ben Forster placed seventh in the 50 free and later swam to a second- place finish in the 500 free. Andrew Leclair placed third in the 500 free. James Reicher placed fourth in both the 200 free and the 100 free, and Brandon Driscoll placed eighth in the 100 free. In the 100 butterfly, Kyle Carbonneau placed fourth and Christopher Gallo placed fifth. In the 100 backstroke, Gallo placed third and Driscoll placed fourth. In the 100 breaststroke, James Baiguy placed fourth and Leclair placed second for WHS, scoring seventh. Baiguy and Carbonneau also placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 individual medley (IM), with Baiguy receiving a personal-best time to date of 2:37.40. The men’s
Milford continued the pressure to start the second half, as two three-pointers within the first 90 seconds extended the lead to 45-16. Jaguar guard Whitehead tried to jump start the Windham offense with a fast break lay-up following a steal and a pull-up jumper shortly after that, but Windham was unable to generate consistent offense, which has been a problem all year as the new program continues to develop and gain experience for the future. One thing the Jaguars have already learned is how to sacrifice themselves for the team, shown by a violent charge taken by sophomore Joe Trovato late in the third quarter, which had his teammates racing to help him up. This led to a mini-run by Windham of 6-0 to close out the quarter. The fourth quarter ended up a free-throw shooting contest, as high school contests often do when both teams get in the bonus situation. Even though the Spartans’ free-throw shooting was sometimes erratic, the lead was too great for Windham to make up. A three-point buzzer-beater by Lorenze closed the scoring and the game at 67-39. Windham’s next contest sees them looking for their first win of the season on Friday in a road game at Hollis-Brookline, one of the other winless teams in Division II.

swimmers placing at this meet. Once again, they were led by a strong finish in their first race of the day, the 200-yard medley relay, with Meghan O’Connor, Angela Bleeker, Julia Bushell, and Emily Matsco finishing in third place. These
