TUESDAY 2.22 BEST BET: Symphony

LIZZ WRIGHT AND GRAND RAPIDS

SYMPHONY DeVos Performance Hall, Grand Rapids Feb. 26, 8 p.m. $23.50 - $95.50 grsymphony.org, (616) 454-9451 ext. 4

LIZZ WRIGHT HAS DONE HER best to dodge genre typecasting throughout her musical career. She was raised as the daughter of a Georgia Pentecostal pastor, which helped her to build a solid gospel founda- tion. She then seamlessly transitioned into blues, never before realizing that there was a difference between the two forms. After releasing her debut album, Salt, in 2003, Wright drew praise and recognition from jazz critics and fans. In the ensuing years, Wright dipped into Brit pop and folk covers, followed by R&B-tinged underground hits. At the end of 2010, the mainstream Associated Press

named her current album, Fellowship, as a runner-up for the top 10 albums of the year, alongside indie darlings Vampire Weekend and Florence and the Machine. And later this month, Wright will join the Grand Rapids Symphony in the next genre-defying step in her evolution. Branded as “Symphony with Soul,” this inimitable concert will explore the influences of Wright’s past and present, backed by the strings our illustrious hometown orchestra.
