BEST BET: Americana LYLE LOVETT – THE SMALL-TOWN BOY with the big hair and even bigger voice – will be doing an acoustic set alongside Jon Hiatt at the Kalamazoo State Theatre on Feb. 3. Best known for his duo, “You Got a Friend in Me,” with Randy Newman on the soundtrack of the original Toy Story and for his elopement and short-lived marriage to Julia Roberts in the early ‘90s, Lovett has a stage career that makes “American Idol” winners drool. Performing since 1980 as an actor, singer/songwriter and Texan, Lovett composes music that’s always been too narrowly bridled as “country,” because in truth, it features heavy influences of folk, blues, jazz, swing and gospel. Called the “Thinking Man’s Cowboy” by The New Yorker, Lovett’s live performances, whether rocking solo or with the large band, are as meticulously well-crafted as his albums. Natural Forces, his latest album released Oct. 2009, exemplifies the same charisma, class and consistency that have been the bedrock of his discography. Expect a mixture of new work and old favorites from his Pontiac and Road to Ensenada albums. Reported by Mitchell Terpstra

SUNDAY 2.06 BEST BET: Indie

BEST COAST Ladies Literary Club, Grand Rapids Feb. 7, 7 p.m. $20, $5 for Calvin students calvin.edu/admin/sao, (616) 526-6064

BEST COAST IS SOOOO INDIE. How indie is it? Best Coast is so indie that it uses blogspot as one of its websites (the other? MySpace). It’s so indie that its single “Boyfriend” was named “Best New Track” by Pitchfork Media. It’s so indie that one of its fans is Jerry Seinfeld… OK, it’s not that indie, but come on, how can you not resist that happy, sappy, surf-y music? With lyrics like “I wish he was my boyfriend/I’d love him to the very end/But instead he’s just a friend,” a

love for kittehs, and its signature lo-fi sound, Best Coast wins over lovelorn teens and music snobs alike. Plus, lead vocalist Bethany Cosentino is pretty hot in that Zooey Deschanel/Kurt Cobain lovechild sort of way. Reported by Lindsay Patton-Carson
