We all know what garage sales and art fairs are. Put the two together and you have a unique shopping event called the Garage Sale Art Fair, which takes the overstock, seconds and extra supplies of more than 100 artists who will be hawking their wares at garage sale prices. For the 15th year, the event takes over two large rooms at the Kalamazoo Expo Center and offers laid back fun with food and refreshments available.

ONIC, ELECTRIC … AND BLUE. The Blue Man Group is a world traveling, high-energy stage show that is at once technological and a little bit tribal. Created by Matt


Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink, the Blue Man Group has grown from a trio of blue-faced collaborators into a mega brand that now features 90 blue men and women from all over the globe. A musical and theatrical experience


paired with humor, fantastical stage lighting and big sound, the Blue Man Group provides a dynamic blend of elements that appeal to all ages. While the Blue Man Group had recently


presented a large-scale touring arena show, the current incarnation focuses on a brand new theatrical tour, showcasing fresh performance material geared toward a proscenium stage. This show aims to simultaneously give audi- ences a bombastic, visual production while providing an intimate, up-close experience. Clem Waldmann, drummer and percus-


sionist, has performed with the Blue Man Group since 1995 and describes the show as, “constantly evolving and changing.” “We try to take themes that are … cur-


rently happening on a social level. A lot of that pertains to technology,” Waldmann said. “There are references to texting and the idea of this tablet-based technology. But, we also like to work on the low tech end of things, where PVC instruments we use come into play.” Although the Blue Man Group relies


heavily on technology, Waldmann says the show is still very primal.

rience with the audience, and I think that’s a great aspect of what we do as a company, and [with] each individual show,” Waldmann said. This particular version of the show is


different because it’s being brought back to a theater setting in this tour. One of the ques- tions of the show is, Waldmann says, with technology today, how do you use technology and still have contact with people? “[Sound and drumming is] one of the


ways that the blue man communicates since there is no speaking from the character. There are different ways we try to communicate, through character, through eyes.” n

Bling is as old as the bourgeoisie, and as long as there are diamonds, there will be glorious knock-offs. Thanks to CoCo Chanel, faux gemstones can be as chic as the wearer wants. This year, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum presents an ode to vintage costume jewelry featuring more than 1,000 pieces dating from the 1920s up through the 2000s. The selection on display comes from the large costume jewelry collection of Grand Haven resident, Kirk Hoffman.
