held Friday, February 4, at 3:45 p.m. in the Phoenix Room of Cottonwood Country Club. The meetings are open to all members and guests. The fi rst SLHC South Mountain Trail Trek
is scheduled for February 18. Information is available on the club website. Guests may hike with the club provided
they contact the hike leader prior to the day of the hike to discuss the hike and get the leader’s permission. It
is strongly
recommended that new hikers and guests start with a Wednesday hike. Guests must sign a release from liability and should be accompanied by an active club member. To join the Hiking Club contact the president, Tom Chase, at 480-895-7819 or one of the hike leaders listed on the hiking schedules. He or she will provide you with details as to what to wear, what to bring and information about what kind of physical condition you should be in to hike in Arizona. Corona/Desert Classic in South Mountain: Rated B, 10.5 miles, trailhead elevation 1460’, elevation gain 1100’, cumulative 1950’. This is an aggressive hike with good views. Driver’s fee is $2 (35 miles r/t). Hike Leader: Jim Cantoni 480-883-8294. February 14. Lookout Mountain: part
of North Phoenix Mountain Preserve: Rated B, 8 miles, trailhead elevation 1480’, accumulated gain 1200’. There will be peak and knob hiking using some unnamed trails. Driver’s fee is $5 (76 miles r/t). Hike Leader: John Chatfi eld 480-883-3121. February
21. Coon Creek Cliff
Dwellings-Hematite House: Rated B, trailhead elevation 2743’, 8.5 miles, 1200’ elevation change, cumulative 2000’. Driver’s fee $14 (224 mile r/t), plus dirt road fee $2. The hike mostly follows a 4WD road to an isolated, well preserved 700-year old Salado cliff dwelling in Coon Creek Canyon NE of Roosevelt Reservoir. Some scrambling is required the last 0.5 miles for this all-day adventure. Beautiful red and yellow-hued iron oxide provides a vivid background for the dwelling complex, nestled in the

hiking at your own pace and distance with some of our club’s most cherished and experienced hikers! February 7. We will be doing the
Perl Charles hike in the Dreamy Draw Recreation Area Park in North Phoenix. Three hiking options are available. Hike as far as you want and back, a loop, and an optional crossover. The options will be determined at the trailhead. The hike length maximum is 6 miles. Ratings on the hikes range from C to C+. 9. Butcher Jones Trail at
Saguaro Lake: Rated C, 5 miles, 1500’ trailhead elevation, 200’ elevation change. Beautiful views of the lake! Driver’s fee $6 (95 miles r/t) plus share of $6 entrance fee. Hike Leader: Rex Bunkley 480-883-1556. February 16. Sunrise Peak Trail in the
McDowell Mountains: Rated B, 6 miles, 1722’ trailhead elevation, 1280’ elevation change. Driver’s fee $5 (80 miles r/t). Hike Leaders: Susie Welker 480-802-9704. February 23. Massacre Grounds in
Superstition Mountains: Rated C, 5 miles, trailhead elevation 2263’, 1100’ elevation change. Driver’s fee $6 (96 miles r/t). There is a “story” behind the Massacre Grounds hike. The hike ends at a lovely little waterfall that will hopefully be spilling over the cliff into a pool. We will lunch at the Mammoth Steakhouse in the Goldfi eld Ghost Town after the hike.
