Janice Hood The February meeting of Gila Butte
Daughters of the American Revolution features some unique conservation efforts. Conservation Chair Nancy Andrews has announced a Recycle Exchange, and meeting attendees may bring unwanted, but still usable, items for re-circulation to other Daughters. Passing along useful accessories and equipment diverts them from landfi ll and protects the environment by saving water, energy and raw materials. In addition, the Gila Butte Board will
serve a “Locavore Lunch” using foods grown and produced locally. Buying local foods
not only supports the area economically but also reduces the carbon footprint, since products are not transported over long distances. DAR’s national Conservation Committee encourages Daughters
to keep good
conservation practices foremost in the minds of Chapter Members. DAR is a national women’s service organization, and the Conservation Committee supports efforts in preservation, education and patriotism. Gila Butte Chapter welcomes membership inquiries to 480-802-5767 or interested parties may go to the website

Sun Lakes Democratic Club
Ruth Kloner, Publicity Sun Lakes Democratic Club will hold
its next meeting on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Navajo Room of Sun Lakes Country Club, 25601 N. Sun Lakes Blvd. Join our club members as we discuss a
pressing topic for the people of Arizona-- THE BUDGET CRISIS. Bill Gates, our club treasurer, will begin
the evening by providing vital information on this diffi cult subject. As Bill says, the situation is
grim. We will hear about
the existing $825 million budget gap in the current fi scal year, which ends on June 30 and the $1.4 billion gap for the upcoming 2011-12 fi scal year. By the meeting the Republican Governor and the predominantly Republican Legislature will have begun to show us how they want to alleviate this fi nancial crisis. How will their plan help Arizonans? Will
it create
jobs, increase educational opportunities, and provide for healthcare assistance so Arizonans can help their state move forward? Bill will
also talk pending Morrison Institute report
about that
a is
critical of the “papering over” of budget defi cits with short-term maneuvers by many states, including Arizona.
What budget items are important to
our members? Bill will lead a discussion as to what club members believe should be budget priorities, for cutting and also for protecting. Since Bill has moved to Arizona from
Cooperstown, NY, he has been very involved with New Adventures in Learning (NAIL), not only as an instructor, but also as past president and now governing board member. He is a retired newspaper editor and small business owner as well as a former elected County Legislator and Vietnam Veteran. Our ongoing club community service
project is to support the nearby Matthew’s Crossing
Food Bank. Please bring
non-perishable food items to the club meetings, which are collected at the west parking lot from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Thanks for your generosity. Please keep up the good work. First of January donations 63 lbs. Donations collected for 10 months total 1963.5 lbs plus $215 cash. Club meetings are held the second each month.
