Sylvia Osborne, Publicity The Sun Lakes Rock, Gem and Silver
Club meets on the third Monday of every month. The club will meet on February 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Sun Lakes Country Club and invites anyone who may be interest in visiting our meetings and/or joining our club.
The club has many volunteers who
devote their time to teach the classes and maintain the equipment as well as hold open shops for those who have taken classes. We welcome anyone who may have an interested in lapidary, working with
silver, dichroic glass, stained glass, beading, wire wrap, gourds, and sandstone painting. Among the classes available is lost wax,
a modern version of Native American sand casting. A wax mold in the desired design is placed in a container fi lled with a plaster-of- paris type mixture. The wax is melted out in a kiln to create a cavity (hence the term “lost wax”). This cavity is then fi lled with molten silver or gold. Pendants, earrings and many other items can be made in the class. Once students have completed a class they will then have access to open shops where they can continue to create new projects. 

“Human Life: Concepts and Controversy” is topic for Restless Minds
Bill Gates “Human Life: Concepts and Controversy”
will be the discussion topic when the Restless Minds group meets in February. The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, February 8 in the sewing room of Oakwood’s Arts and Crafts Center. Meetings are open to all people with inquisitive, open minds. There are no dues or membership requirements. February discussion leader, Dr. Robert is a retired philosophy professor
Wallace,
and will ask the group to consider such fundamental questions as:
What do we mean by “having a right to life”
and what are the implications of the statement? May we appropriately speak of “the sanctity
of human life?” Do humans have “inalienable” rights? What
are they and on what ground? When does human life begin and end? Is a
person more than a biological organism? The group meets on the second Tuesday
of each month, September to May. This is a change from previous years when Restless Minds met on the fi rst Tuesday of each month. For more information call Bobbie Reed or Bill Gates at 480-883-7410. 
