Judy Hippner After four years as leader of The East
Valley Marines, Richard Hippner is stepping down to take his place in the ranks of the group’s volunteers. Moving up the chain of command, Chuck Crist is now the new commandant. At a ceremony this week, Hippner was honored for his leadership, which saw the group host four Marine Corps Birthday Balls and raise tens of thousands of dollars in charity funding. Highlight of his command was the purchase of a custom seven-passenger golf cart, which was donated to the Wounded Warriors at Camp Pendleton to use as hospital transportation. The idea for a local Marine Corps
League started with Richard Hippner and his wife Judy over four years ago. In response
to press releases in the local
newspapers, the fi rst unoffi cial meeting took place in their living room, and from there membership has now swelled to over 100. Today the Marine Corps Birthday Ball is reputed to be one of the best in Arizona and counts as its guests scores of wounded Marines, generals and admirals, veterans, community leaders, elected offi cials, media personalities, and noted speakers. For the last four years the Ball has sold out.
What makes Hippner especially proud is that attendance is free to all active duty Marines, their guests and FMF corpsmen. “I had a great team and together we created a unit that makes all of us proud to be Marines,” he said. Most recently Hippner introduced a guest speaker schedule, bringing in young war heroes, experts on veteran services, gun legislation in Arizona, efforts to help homeless vets and a visit by General Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff. The League also tributes fallen Marines of all ages and sends representatives to their funerals. Rich Hippner brought an illustrious career
to his volunteer position as commandant of this local USMC League. Serving seven years active duty in the Marines, he spent a year in Vietnam fl ying H34 helicopters and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and 15 Air Medals, representing 315 combat missions. He has stayed in contact with his war buddies and 30 years ago organized their fi rst reunion. They still meet once every three years to talk about their common bonds. That devotion to the Corps and its men and women was evident in his four years as commandant here in the East Valley. Under Hippner’s leadership, the group set up projects to serve the Veterans’
