On 15th November 2010, The Grey Coat Hospital hosted representatives from the NHS in the institute's official national launch of a lesson plan for Children and Young People's Emergency and Urgent Health Care education.
The lesson plan was designed for the Personal Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) for 11- 14 year olds, to help students understand what the different emergency and urgent care options are in their area.
First a mock lesson was taught with Year 8 which went beautifully thanks to the fine orchestration by Ms Shaw and Ms Lockyer. Then the launch lesson was taught by Ms Lockyer (Mathematics and PSHCE Teacher), at the school on 15 November 2010 launching the lesson plan to the national media and secondary schools across England.
During this lesson the class took to the task with much gusto aided by their energetic teacher– they really lifted the lesson plan pack off the page and
brought it to life including designing and acting out “advertisements” / and imparting key messages for the various emergency services such as NHS Direct and GP surgeries, but also debating with each other about what services to access for different health problems.
The girls interviewed for the programme were Rochelle Fontaine, Melissa Umolo, Adah Jones, Ronnie Bond and Chloe Murr. They found that they had learned something new and would act differently in the future given the information they were taught.
