Margie Engle Takes $75,000 Ricoh Big Ben Challenge, Ending Whitaker’s Three-Year Streak

Ireland’s Dermott Lennan named Leading Interna- tional Rider for the second year in a row while Ian Millar named Leading Canadian Rider and his mount, Victoria, takes the “All Canadian Cup” for top Canadian horse.

November 13, 2010, Toronto, Ontario – One of America’s most successful show jumpers of all time, Margie Engle of West Palm Beach, Florida, won the $75,000 Ricoh Big Ben Challenge in Toronto of November 13th closing the week of international com- petition for another year. A standing-room only, capac- ity crowd of nearly 5,700 spectators created an elec- tric atmosphere in the Ricoh Coliseum.

delivered the only fault-free performance in the seven-way jump off, emerging victorious with Indigo, a horse she has only been riding since April of this year.

“The Royal is one of our favourite indoor shows,” said Engle following the awards. “It’s one of the older, traditional shows where everybody still gets dressed up, and it’s a very educated group of specta- tors which always makes it nice for the com- petitors.”

The pair, who won the $100,000 World Cup Grand Prix last week at an event in Syracuse, ended a three-year winning streak of this class by Great Britain’s Michael Whitaker. Today was not without success for Team Whitaker, however, as Michael won the ever-popular Canine-Equine Chal- lenge in this afternoon’s matinee horse show.

Lennon was crowned Leading Inter- national Rider this week, following consis- tent results in all the major classes. McLain
