Community Free taxpayer assistance available


Beginning Feb. 7 and running through April 9, the City of Chandler provides free tax preparation services at three Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in an effort to help low- and moderate- income residents claim their refunds and up to $5,600 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). Last year, Chandler’s VITA program assisted nearly 800 families with their tax returns, helping families claim $1.3 million in refunds. A VITA site at the First Credit Union located at 25 S. Arizona Pl. will offer free walk-in tax preparation services from 5 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays.


Free tax assistance will also be available on a walk-in basis from noon to 8 p.m. every Thursday at a VITA site located at the Community Services of Arizona (CSA) offi ce, 650 N. Arizona Ave. Appointments will also be available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at CSA Monday through Thursday by calling 480-963-4321, ext. 230.


A third VITA site at the Chandler Care Center, 777 E. Galveston St., will assist taxpayers between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Saturday on a walk-in basis. Chandler’s VITA sites help further the City’s efforts to help low-income taxpayers fi le the forms necessary to receive the EITC credit that goes


IRS Free File program available


The Free File Alliance, a coalition of industry- leading tax software companies, partnered with the Internal Revenue Service to offer the 2011 IRS Free File program.


Since its inception in 2003, IRS Free File has offered low- to moderate- income taxpayers free access to leading commercial tax preparation software. This year, every taxpayer with a 2010 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less may visit www.IRS.gov to prepare, complete and e-fi le their federal tax returns at no cost.


Begin the process by visiting www.IRS.gov and clicking on the “Free File” icon to see a list of Free File Alliance member companies. Then, choose one that fi ts your needs or utilize the “help me fi nd a


company” tool. After selecting a company, you will be transferred to the company’s website to prepare, complete and electronically fi le federal income tax returns. Three of the 19 participating software companies also offer services in Spanish. This year, the Free File Alliance has also partnered with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), a service for low- to moderate- income taxpayers. Thanks to the new partnership, Free File Alliance member software will be available on self-assist kiosks at VITA sites in 29 states across the country. VITA’s partnership with the Free File Alliance will extend its reach and help the IRS provide expanded free tax prep services to more taxpayers who need additional assistance.
