Rahm Emanuel Former White House Chief of Staff and Current Candidate for Mayor of Chicago

Tell me a little bit about your athletic background: “I played soccer in high school, but I wanted to im- prove my soccer game so I took up ballet and that ended up being dance and ballet. But I’ve always worked out. Out of college and into adulthood, I’m a swimmer. I swim a mile three times a week, for what has now been about 25 years. After I swim, I do a quick 10-minutes of weight lifting. On Tues- days and T ursdays, I will bike 25 minutes on a stationary bike, then I do 15 minutes on the ellipti- cal, then I do a little over 100 sit-ups and a quick

weight routine. On Saturday, if it’s nice weather, I’ll bike 20 miles and on Sunday I do a one hour private yoga class.”

Where do you fi nd the time to workout? “I get up at 5:15 in the morning and start. I’m done with my workout by 7 a.m.”

With your swimming and cycling background, do you have any interest in triathlons? “I did a triathlon in 2004 [Chicago Triathlon]. T at was my mid-life crisis. It was my mid-life crisis tri-

athlon. I’m going to do another sprint [distance], assuming I have time to prepare, this summer.”

The Chicago Triathlon? “Well, I’m not going to go to another city to do it. [Laughs]”

Why is physical fi tness so important to you? “It’s a great way, given the stress of the job, to clear my head. I always say to my staff , ‘let me swim on it’ so I get a chance to work through stuff . You can only count laps for so long.”
