by Sue LaRoche On Friday, January 14, the 0-5 Alvirne Broncos hung tough against an undefeated Trinity squad (5-0), taking a very difficult 54-52 loss. In a game that had only 10 free throws all night (two for the Broncos and eight for Trinity), the quick, physical play made for a very exciting contest. Alvirne came out of the blocks, quickly taking a 12-3 lead in the first quarter, and with much energy and intensity, they managed to maintain the nine-point lead going into the half with a 27-18 lead. Trinity made some adjustments in the third quarter and narrowed the lead to four points. It was a disappointing fourth quarter, in which the Broncos were outscored 18-11, and that was the downfall for the Broncos. With 2:37 to play in the contest, the score was

tied at 49. Trinity then scored five unanswered points to take a 54-49 lead with 1:39 to go. Caleb Donnelly sunk a three-point shot from the corner with 1:25 to bring Alvirne to within two points. With less than 10 seconds to play, Sean Dunn grabbed a rebound and Jon Baldwin ran the length of the court and appeared to be bumped when he took a short jumper, which missed. Tony Beaulieu scooped the rebound on the missed shot, but was unable to connect on the put-back as time expired.

Lady Broncos Continue Victorious
by Sue LaRoche The Alvirne Lady Broncos basketball team continued its winning
ways with a 48-40 road victory over Trinity, bringing their record to 6-2 in NHIAA Division 1 and 10-2 overall. Alvirne fought hard all night—at one point taking a 12-point lead. “We bent, but we did not break,” explained Coach Steve Tracy. The Broncos had a season-high 34 rebounds, and handled the Trinity pressure defense well all night. The Broncos had strong defensive efforts from Jessica Underwood, Maya DesFosses, and Emily Gosselin, while only four Broncos scored for Alvirne. Katie Donovan, who had a hot hand all night, led all scorers with 19 points, followed by DJ Purcell, who added 14 points. Taylor
Carbone added eight points and Sandi Purcell, who ran the point well all night, added seven points, including two key free throws down the stretch. “Although it was a very intense game, we handled the ball very well, finishing with only three turnovers,” said Coach Tracy, who concluded with, “a good team win against a quality opponent.” The junior varsity squad also came away with a victory, although
it was a bit closer with a 35-33 victory in the last four seconds of the game. Leanne Winans, who scored 20 points on the night, scored the winning basket off an inbounds play. The Lady Broncos will be at home again on January 28 when they
host Keene. Sandy
