but unlike in the first-period for the Pack, a goal did not result. A mere three minutes and 46 seconds later, Bronco Cam Brock changed that reality by upping the Alvirne lead to 3-1 with just over 10 minutes left to play in regulation. Not sitting on the lead, Alvirne continued to play hard and apply the offensive pressure. But just 35 seconds after an unsuccessful Wolf Pack power

(Pettis 2/Hrubowchak 1) gave them a devastating, 11-2 run, and on the heels of Pettis’ 15-point opening quarter assault, the Cougars led by 13 at 20-7. Mercilessly, the Cougars continued their attack by recording the second quarter’s first six points, making the score 26-7 and causing Conant to call a time-out with 5:18 left in the half. Another Pettis hoop pushed the spurt to 8-0 and the defense that held Conant to only seven first-quarter points stiffened even more, shutting down their offense by allowing only four points in the second stanza. At the half, after suffering several damaging jabs and a thunderous right hook by Pettis (19 first-half points), the 2008 and 2010 state champs humbly made their way to the visitor’s locker room down 29-11. Like true champions do, Conant fought off the first-half adversity and came out strong to start the third. Senior guard Kim Daniels

went on a personal 6-0 run for the birds, cutting Campbell’s lead to 29-17. A revitalized Conant defense came out of the halftime intermission and completely shut down the CHS offense, and it wasn’t until Hrubowchak’s three-pointer with 1:37 left on the clock that the Cougars scored their first hoop of the quarter. Though being outscored 10 to six in the third, CHS remained comfortably in front, 35-21, after three quarters. Evenly played through the first four minutes of the final quarter, Conant found themselves still within reach, down 41-27. Coming out of a time-out with just under four minutes to play, a Conant turnover, resulting in a Pettis ‘and 1,’ pushed the lead to 17 and it was time to start warming up the bus for the return trip to Jaffrey. With just under two minutes left in the game, a breakaway lay-up by Hrubowchak, making it 50-29, drew an enthusiastic chant from the student body, led by the boys’ varsity hoopsters: “ It’s all over” (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap). Yes, it was! After the game, CHS coaches, while acknowledging Pettis’ incredible offensive explosion, couldn’t say enough about their defense. An excited Coach Flynn marveled on his girls‘ shutting

of that save, senior Colin Begin had one last-gasp scoring chance at the top of the crease. It was not meant to be and the Broncos escaped with an exciting one-goal win. Although Coach Gould was very pleased with a

good effort from his squad, he still felt there were some things his team needed to work on. This past practice, he indicated, “we’ve been working on shooting low and getting rebounds,“ adding that “we are still trying for the pretty goal.” Rubber abounded in this contest, as a total of 75 shots on goal were taken. Alvirne netminder Carpentier emerged with a solid 30-save performance on the afternoon along with the victory. The Wolf Pack is next on the ice when they take on division front-runner Somersworth on the road on January 22. On the same day, the Broncos are on the road against the Pembroke- Campbell skaters. Have an ’ice’ day !

down of who he feels is the best player in Division III: “Shannon Savard and Marissa Framarini on Brooke; those two won the basketball game,” he said. “It took a defensive effort to win against what I feel to be the best team in the division.” With similar praise, assistant coach Rod Hayward added that the team “had good team defense,” saying that “after the third-period time-out, we got back to what we were doing well.”

Behind the monstrous 30-point performance by Pettis was

Hrubowchak with a dozen points, as only five Cougars scored on the night. For Conant, sharp-shooter Kim Daniels led the way, scoring 13, while Springfield was held in check with only 10 points. In earlier action, an under-manned JV Lady Cougar team fell to Conant by a score of 39-33. Conant finished the first half with a 7-0 run, breaking a 16-all tie. In the second half, the Cougars clawed back with an eight-to-two run of their own, pulling to within one point at 25-24. With Brianna Hardy and Alex Trevains fouling out of the game, the junior Cougars had to play the final six minutes of the game with only five available players. They held tough, sliding only in the last three minutes of the game. Head coach Shawn Baskerville, in admiration of his girls’ effort, said, “they are the grittiest team I’ve ever had—they are tenacious.” Hardy led the CHS offense with 15 points while the Orioles were led by Kelsey Smith with 16 and Karley Fish with a dozen. Tuesday, January 25, is Campbell’s next home game when they host the Hillcats of Hillsboro-Deering HS.

submitted by Leo Thyne The MLK weekend brought excitement to this group of

girls. They laced up their sneakers ready for the challenge ahead of them. The girls overcame some tough games against Londonderry, Litchfield, and the Portsmouth Spartans. By the end of the weekend, the girls finished the tournament 4-0. Great job by all the teams participating in this year’s tournament.
