Jaguars Continue to Struggle

The Jaguars took an early 4-2 lead on a short-range jump shot from sophomore Conor Redmond and a long-range jumper from junior Scott Priestley, but the still-developing offense faltered as

Oyster River went on 14 to 2 run to create a double-digit lead they would not give up.

guard Alex Whitehead, whose driving lay-ups tend to be a focal point of the Jaguar offense, Windham simply had little answer for the Bobcats’ two big men: six- foot, five-inch Adam Goodwin and six-foot, four-inch Liam Grennier. The difference in both size and experience, as well as Oyster River’s ability to generate fast-break points off steals, led to a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Windham tried to close the gap in the second quarter with free throw shooting, as a continuing trend in the Jaguar season shows them able to get the other team into foul trouble quickly. They went four for seven from the charity stripe in the second quarter, but Oyster River’s ability to get second- and third-chance points from offensive rebounds widened the gap to 37-16 at halftime. The second half played out

much the same as the first. Despite playing tough team

defense, including Redmond sacrificing himself on multiple offensive charges by the Bobcats, the Jaguars did not have enough offensive firepower to make up the difference. Windham reserves Jeff Trovato and Matt Shamon contributed in the fourth quarter, scoring five and six points, respectively, but it was not enough to make up the deficit. Priestley (seven points) led Windham in scoring, while Shamon and Andrew Lowman each had six.

Oyster River (5-1) finds themselves near the top of Division Two standings, with their only loss coming in an opening night, three-point squeaker against Bedford. Windham, along with Plymouth, Hollis-Brookline, and Sanborn, are still looking for their first win on the season. The Jaguars will try to get it in their upcoming contests, at Goffstown (5-1) on Friday and home versus John Stark (2-4) on Tuesday.

Rippon, and Evan Lysacek. Jimmy and Alex qualified for the National Championships by earning a silver medal at the United States Sectional Figure Skating Championships held in Aston, PA, last November. They have since been training every day for Nationals. The team’s coaches, Bobby Martin, Sheryl Franks, and Carrie Wall, recently held a “mock” nationals exhibition for the skaters at Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena, including artificial crowd noise, a national announcer, and an actual USFSA judge. This was done to simulate the Nationals experience on the ice to better prepare the skaters. Thank you to many of Jimmy’s friends who came down to participate! The U.S. National

Championships, held annually since 1914, is the nation’s most prestigious figure skating event, crowning national champions in ladies, men’s, pairs, and ice dancing in each of the senior, junior, and novice divisions. In addition to determining the U.S. champions, the event serves as the final step in determining the U.S. teams for the World Figure Skating Championships, World Junior Figure Skating Championships, Four Continent Figure Skating Championships, and the Olympic Winter Games. Visit www.northcarolina2011.com for more information. While training for Nationals, Alex and Jimmy were guest skaters at the exhibition held at Frog Pond in Boston Common this past New Year’s Eve. Portions of this exhibition were shown live on NECN. Alex and Jimmy also recently participated in the filming of the major motion picture Rise as background skaters. Commissioned by U.S. Figure Skating, the film Rise will celebrate American figure skating while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team that perished in a plane crash on its way to the World Championships in Prague. Produced and directed by 16-time Emmy Award winners Look-alike Productions, Rise will document the sports’ growth in popularity over the years and feature various luminaries of American figure skating. Proceeds from the movie will go to the U.S. Figure Skating’s Memorial Fund, established as a legacy to those who lost their lives in the crash. The film is scheduled to screen for one night only – February 17 – to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the tragedy. Alex and Jimmy both represent the Skating Club of Boston.
