“Spiral” (2008) (figure 6) began as a traditional bust that Defeo scanned and then used FreeForm to extract only a one-quarter inch thickness of the original work. Beginning at the neckline, he then added a 2-foot long, computer-generated spiral whose arc and size he defined in FreeForm. After refining the spiral head, he used a 3D printer to produce it in black resin –looking stone-like, yet lightweight enough to mount on a wall. Next Defeo used FreeForm to design intricate filigree – using the software to precisely ‘subtract out’ the shape of the head from the filigree’s shape, so the filigree would wrap tightly and exactly around the spiral. The filigree was also 3D printed but received a manual application of gold leaf, creating an extraordinarily rich accent.
