Alvirne FFA Wraps Successful Fall Season
submitted by Gilyan Barrett, FFA Chapter Reporter, Alvirne High School There have been many events that the Alvirne Future Farmers of America (FFA) has attended; the fall interscholastic at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), Deerfield Fair’s FFA day, the Big E’s FFA day, the Fall Leadership conference, and Nationals. At UNH, the Forestry, Floriculture, Dairy Judging, and Dairy Showmanship teams all competed. The Forestry team came in third overall, with John Collishaw coming in first for chainsaw. For Floriculture, the team came in seventh overall. Dairy Judging did not place in the top three overall, but still did well. And for the Dairy Showmanship results, Sara Madden came in second in comparison to her fellow showmen. In October, we went to Deerfield Fair and competed in dairy judging, showmanship, and flower arrangements. Overall, the dairy judging novice team came in first, with Mikayla Roberts coming in second for her individual judging. Sara Madden came in first for Dairy Showmanship. Floriculture came in second overall. Courtney Wilcox and Denijean Sutton both placed first
individually in the experienced category, and a majority of the girls came in either first or second. The 2010 FFA National Convention was held in Indianapolis, IN. Teams from all 50 states, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, were there to compete. Alvirne FFA’s Floriculture team included Emily Provencher, Bree Albertine, Alysha Brennan, and Denijean Sutton. The Environmental and Natural Resource (ENR) team was comprised of Kate Cierletta, Jennifer Gagnon, and Gilyan Barrett. Each Career Development Event’s competition took about two days to complete. Floriculture received a bronze placing as a team, and Emily, Bree, Alysha, and Denijean also received bronze for their individual work. The ENR team also placed bronze in comparison to the other teams. Individually, Kate and Gilyan received bronze medals individually, while Jennifer received a silver medal. All in all, this has been a very successful fall 2010 for
the Alvirne FFA Chapter. Many first- and second-place ribbons and awards were received, and many rewarding leadership opportunities led to many new friends made.
