Share the beautiful history of Whaka village and its people. Enter through the memorial archway to an authentic Maori village, set amidst an active geothermal landscape. View the arts, crafts and culture that is Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao. The people live surrounded by bubbling mud pools and steaming mineral springs. These pools and springs are used in everyday life: see how hangi meals are cooked in natural steam vents and corn on the cob is cooked in a crystal-clear boiling spring. The thermal baths are used morning and night by the residents of the village.

Enjoy spectacular scenery with cascading waterfalls tumbling into the river, beautiful forest views and sheer rock gorges clad in native bush. Ideal for families or those looking for a more relaxed rafting adventure, the Lower Rangitaiki Scenic trip offers gentle rolling rapids that never rise above Grade 2. The trip takes around 1½ hours on the water but around 6 hours in total, including travelling to and from Rotorua. Complimentary pick up is available from central Rotorua accommodation.

Begin with a gentle self-guided walk through New Zealand’s most active geothermal reserve. View the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere, the only mud volcano, bubbling mud, exploding waters, soft hot waters and mud of Sulphur Lake. After the walk, take a 20 minute geothermal mud bath which will leave your skin very clean and soft. Then soak in the pure, sulphurous waters of the spa, overlooking the geothermal reserve and enjoy the hot waterfall. You may relax here for as long as you like.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing passes over varied and spectacular terrain in the presence of two active volcanoes, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe. It is world famous as New Zealand’s best one-day trek and is part of the Tongariro National Park Dual World Heritage area. Experience mountain springs, a glacial valley, old lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views in an alpine setting.
Departure: Daily (weather permitting) NOTE: No alpine experience is required. This hike can be challenging for some people and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
