LETTERS FromtheNPA
John, I just received the electronic version of ParkingToday
and was also able to listen to your personal comments about the National ParkingAssociation’s “Parking Show of Shows” and the “House of Cars: Innovation and the Park- ing Garage” exhibit at the National BuildingMuseum here in DC. Thanks verymuch for the coverage and the kindwords.
I agree wholeheartedly that our support of the “House of Cars” is an important step to highlighting the value of our industry and has raised the water level, allowing the boats of all parking professionals to float higher!
Kindest regards, Marty Martin L. Stein President, National ParkingAssociation

‘A Players’ Need to Toot
Their Horn to Get a Job “‘A players’ are at a huge disadvantage when looking for a job
in this rotten economy,” says Brad Smart, founder of Topgrad-
ing.com and author of six books on talent management. He has conducted 65,000 oral case studies with high performers, asking how they got jobs. This topic is particularly relevant to the engi- neering and construction industries. But in this economy, hundreds of thousands ofA players are
out looking for a job, but they are at a disadvantage because they don’t know how tomarket themselves and they are competing with lesser performers who have mastered the art of getting a job – building hype and deception into their resume and lying in inter- views, Smart says. “‘C players’ have read all the books on how to deceive hiring
mangers, and A players are the naïve, honest job hunters who haven’t learned how to show they are the real thing.A player job hunters are way too humble,” says Smart, “because in the past, job offers came from people well aware of how good they were and humility was the bestmethod.” When competing with master job hunters who are really
chronic underperformers,A players can do two things, Smart says, amounting to “tooting their horn” more: Revise their resume to list impressive accomplishments, and revise their cover letter to say they have consistently received top performance ratings and would be happy to arrange reference calls with bosses to prove it.
