Lego League Champions By Cindy Crandall

Allegany Limestone Lego Troopers “Medical Unit” was the overall Champion for the Cattaraugus Allegany BOCES, 2010, Southern Tier Lego Qualifying Tournament, held on Saturday, November 20 at Houghton College. Excitement permeated the air as eleven teams convened to compete for a chance to move on to the Finger Lakes First Lego League Regional Tournament at the University of Rochester. More than 100 teams of stu- dents ages 9 – 14, gathered at various venues throughout the Finger Lakes Region over the weekend to participate in this high-energy event. Schools participating at Houghton also included Hins- dale, Randolph, West Seneca, Portville, Ellicottville, New- fane, and Fillmore.

First Lego League is a world- wide organization whose vi- sion is, “To transform our cul- ture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of be- coming science and technol- ogy heroes.” To be science and technology leaders, the program engages them in an exciting mentor-based pro- gram that builds science, engi- neering and technology skills. The students use Lego kits to build robots that can be pro- grammed to perform specific tasks. They designed, re- searched, built, programmed, tested, and refined a fully autonomous robot, capable of completing various missions. They are judged on their robot design, robot performance, teamwork, and project pres- entation. This year the theme, “Body Forward,” asked

teams to explore the cutting- edge world of Biomedical En- gineering to discover innova- tive ways to solve issues in the field of medicine.

Receiving trophies for their Project, Design and Perform- ance teams from Fillmore Central, Portville Central and Newfane Central schools. They joined Allegany- Limestone at the University of Rochester to compete in the Regional Tournament on De- cember 5. Our area teams had a great time in Rochester and are excited to, “3..2..1 LEGO!!” again next year!
